Steven Sharif, the founder and head of Ashes of Creation, shared many new details about his MMORPG in an Ask me anything. We at MeinMMO summarize the most important points for you if you don’t want to watch the full 63 minutes.
What major innovations did Sharif share?
- The classes in Ashes of Creation consist of two different archetypes. Overall, there are 8 archetypes and thus 64 class combinations. Each archetype is expected to have around 35 to 40 skills. However, the number of skill points will prevent you from unlocking all skills at once.
- Healing is said to be very skill-based and you will need to aim with your abilities. This sounds a bit like the system from Wildstar back in the day.
- Professions will be divided into three types – Gathering, Processing, and Crafting. This strongly resembles New World.
- Questing and grinding are said to be the best methods to level up a character. However, there will also be XP for PvP and Crafting.
What does he say about future tests? Alpha 2 is supposed to start when the core mechanics of Alpha 1 have been expanded and new content for Alpha 2 has been created. Core mechanics include character progression, skill trees, server technologies, leveling the nodes, and a combat log.
Based on this, new content can be developed, such as new quests, the missing classes, and the naval system. Development is currently focused on these contents as well as on bugs and issues that should not be present in a public version.
However, Sharif did not reveal when the next Alpha will start. You can watch the complete video here:
Ashes of Creation is far beyond the planned release – and gets criticism for it
What else did Sharif talk about? The AMA also covered topics such as the differences between staves and spellbooks, the field of vision at sea, possible server mergers after release, and the display of names in the game. However, these questions were either very specific or were only vaguely answered.
How is the development of Ashes progressing? Rather sluggish. Although there are regular updates from Steven Sharif and his team, including a monthly livestream, they are far behind the original schedule.
Ashes of Creation was originally supposed to be released in 2019, but by the end of 2022, it couldn’t even manage to have a permanent Alpha active. Nevertheless, Ashes of Creation is considered a major Western MMORPG hope – especially due to Sharif’s visions.
