The head of Larian, Swen Vincke, is no longer working on Baldur’s Gate 3, but on his next project. What exactly that is, only he knows. Nevertheless, he is already talking about it on X (formerly Twitter) and generating dozens of theories and discussions about what might come next from the studio of the best game of 2023.
This is the tweet: In a post on X from January 8, 2024, Swen Vincke shares his current enthusiasm. After 4 months, he has finally figured out what Act 1 of his next “thing” should be.
After many discarded ideas, he finally found a direction. Such work can be frustrating, but in the end, even discarded “drafts” help in development. Somehow, they can certainly still be incorporated.
After months of feeling like a failure because everyone was asking for the thread to follow, he finally feels excitement again. And he wants to share it.
Why is this exciting?
- Larian Studios is an independent developer, especially known among RPG fans. The team has made a name for itself with the Divinity series, some of the best role-playing games ever.
- After years of development, Baldur’s Gate 3 was released in August 2023, the sequel to an old game series. It was a hit, and soon it was said: the game sets new standards for gaming.
- The success surprised the developers themselves. Instead of the planned 100,000 players, millions joined. Baldur’s Gate 3 was named Game Of The Year 2023.
Accordingly, thousands of fans are now eagerly waiting for what will come next from Swen Vincke and his team.

Vincke makes it clear: what he writes is not meant to be a teaser for an announcement. It will take some time before the studio can talk about what he is currently working on. Nevertheless, the rumors are running hot, and the discussion quickly spills over on Reddit and elsewhere.
Fans are wondering what Swen Vincke could be working on. The biggest assumption and desire at this point is a sequel to Divinity: Original Sin 2 and a DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3.
However, both are rather unlikely: Vincke had previously said in an interview that the team does not want to tackle such extensive RPGs for a while (via YouTube). And Vincke is no longer working on Baldur’s Gate 3; he is already dedicating himself to other projects.
So what is Swen Vincke working on now? Already in December 2023, the head tweeted that he was working on a new fishing game. Whether that was just a joke or not is hard to say – but the response was very positive. Many fans would play that.
Vincke writes that the new project “is not what you think,” thus ruling out Divinity. There is speculation about a science fiction game, but nothing concrete yet.
What seems clear is that it is indeed a new game and not a book or series. This is explicitly stated in Vincke’s profile.
There is also no date yet, but there are already rough indications. For example, the Larian chief reacted to a joking response for “GOTY 2029” by saying that he first wanted to fend it off – but then counted his fingers.
