In Destiny 2 more and more curious bugs are coming to light that Bungie apparently cannot fix. First, the Min/Max Glitch, and now a severe FPS error. It punishes all players who have powerful PCs or consoles with an extra dose of damage.
Destiny 2 has changed a lot since its initial release. Many details in the game have now been visually revamped. Sound and graphics have gradually been improved. With the Content Vault, Bungie has also become faster at fixing game errors.
But right now, the long-term fixing of errors is especially lacking:
- Players have exploited the so-called Min/Max Glitch undisturbed for months
- Bungie bans Telesto but forgets an essential Trials mode
- Overload Champions continue to act insane and cannot be interrupted
For the players, it seems that Bungie is currently not fully engaged. This is also shown by the latest FPS error. What sounds like a bad joke is not.
In Destiny 2 it is bad to have good hardware
Actually, more FPS is a cool thing. Unless you are currently playing Destiny 2. There, players are now intentionally ensuring they have as few FPS as possible.
FPS stands for “Frames per second”. The FPS value indicates how many images appear on a screen per second, and thus, how smoothly the image runs. It is often referred to as “frame rate”. It depends on your hardware whether you can play a game smoothly or not. In the gaming sector, it is often crucial to achieve a high FPS count.
What exactly is the problem? The FPS error hits particularly hard players who own powerful PCs or consoles. So all those who place great value on a high FPS count. Just how hard is demonstrated vividly by the Destiny 2 player in the Strike “The Devil’s Lair”:
The player skdKitsune describes it on reddit as follows:
According to my understanding, projectiles deal “tick damage” when penetrating a body, and these ticks are registered more frequently at higher frame rates. […] I thought the days when we tied our game physics and mechanics to the frame rate were long gone, but unfortunately, I was proven wrong.
What does Bungie say about it? The community already pointed out this issue to Bungie support 7 months ago. Bungie’s community manager dmg04 quickly responded, indicating that the issue had been forwarded to support. However, it has still not been resolved to this day.
The fact that Bungie is taking so long may have a specific reason. This is pointed out by the reddit user Zykeismus:
The engine was developed for a game that was limited to 30 FPS on last-generation consoles, so it must have made sense back then. Only with the PC port in Forsaken and new consoles did it become a problem that is probably buried so deeply in the foundation that it will now be hell to fix.
This is why players drastically decrease their FPS
As long as this FPS error remains unaddressed by Bungie, players are now lowering their frame rate cap in the Destiny 2 settings menu. This way, they can reduce the incoming damage without any trouble.
Surviving almost indefinitely is no longer a problem as long as you don’t care about your frame rate. Destiny 2 is currently the only shooter where you should actually lower your FPS.
The players are taking it easy: When in the Destiny 2 reddit orangpelupa asks: “If I go down to 10 FPS, will I be invincible?”, OwerlordTheLord responds with, “1 FPS and you are the next raid boss!”
Bungie will make some changes with an update on December 7. These include various nerfs to Stasis and Exotics. It would be a good time to address this FPS error consistently before the new expansion 2022.
Have you noticed these enormous fluctuations in damage? And would you say that this makes some unexplained deaths understandable because they may be due to FPS fluctuations? Or are you already consciously playing with 30-60 FPS for this life advantage?
