The “I hunt monsters and kill them” game Monster Hunter World was a huge success for Capcom in 2018. They have now revealed sales figures and disclosed how many players purchased the major expansion Iceborne in 2019. Additionally, the list shows what the 20 top-sellers from Capcom actually are.
Here are the sales figures for MHW: Capcom has now published a list of the 20 best-selling games in the studio’s history. This list is as of December 31, 2019:
- At number one on the list is Monster Hunter World with 14.9 million units sold
- At number 18, you will find Monster Hunter World: Iceborne with 3.2 million units sold
This means that 21.4% of the players who own Monster Hunter World have also purchased the expansion by the end of 2019.
Iceborne sales figures are likely even higher thanks to Steam
Important to note: By the end of December 2019, only the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne had been released. The PC version of Iceborne was only released on Steam in January 2020.
Iceborne had excellent player numbers on Steam at release, which almost reached the levels that Monster Hunter World achieved at its PC release.
Therefore, it can be assumed that the sales figures for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne have likely increased further by now.
Capcom lives on 3 game franchises
What are the hits for Capcom? When looking at the list of the 20 top games, it becomes clear that Capcom mainly thrives on 3 game series:
- first is Monster Hunter – the series appears 8 times in the list
- Resident Evil occupies 6 places on the list, including 2, 3, and 4
- Street Fighter is represented 4 times on the list
This means that 18 out of the 20 top games from Capcom belong to just 3 major franchises. The other 2 games are Devil May Cry 5 (number 19) and Dead Rising (number 20).
