With the new State of Play, Capcom announced a new game for PlayStation called Exoprimal. The cooperative shooter looks like a mix of Anthem and World War Z, only that you fight against dinosaurs instead of zombies. Some fans are not pleased with the announcement at all, as they were hoping for something entirely different with the mention of dinosaurs.
What game is it about? In Exoprimal, lizards from prehistoric times continually storm into the world and you must fight them. You have access to futuristic suits like from Anthem to combat the dinosaurs.
With tons of weapons and special abilities, you must battle true hordes of raptors or giant triceratops. It all strongly resembles Anthem, just with dinosaurs and in co-op. You can read more about the game in our announcement news for Exoprimal.
Along with the presentation, the first trailer for the game was also released. This showcases gameplay and the main characters. However, some Capcom fans are not at all satisfied with what has been shown.
These are the community reactions: Especially on Twitter, there are many complaints about Exoprimal. Not because the game looks bad, but because it is simply the “wrong” game. Fans had hoped for a new Dino Crisis at the presentation, a survival series that originally started in 1999.
It is said, for example: “Why is Capcom making a new dinosaur game, just for it not to be Dino Crisis?” (via Twitter). There are also numerous reactions on YouTube in the same vein: “This is NOT Dino Crisis?!” (via YouTube)
Especially the portrayal of the characters and the content of the trailer have been met with displeasure. A female character, who is in focus for some time, has notably red hair. She resembles Regina, an important character from Dino Crisis.
Furthermore, the futuristic setting and the dinosaurs themselves lead many fans to draw parallels to popular survival games. Only that Exoprimal is not Dino Crisis, but something entirely different.
“Are you trying to make a fool of me with this bait?”
This is what makes the fans so angry: Dino Crisis is a game series that was published by Capcom between 1999 and 2003. The series includes 5 titles, which are partially sequels to one another.
For 19 years, fans of the series have been waiting for a continuation. In 2017, there was even an official tweet, stating that if enough people wish for it, a new Dino Crisis will come. However, that hasn’t happened to this day. There have been fan remakes, but no official new installment.
Instead, with Exoprimal comes a game that apparently draws from Dino Crisis, but is not a new installment of the series. Moderate players say, for example: if Capcom had called the game Dino Crisis, the outcry would have been even louder. After all, it’s something entirely different. Nevertheless, the disappointment is great.
What makes Dino Crisis so special? The horror survival series can be roughly compared to Turok. The gameplay resembles the earlier games of the Resident Evil series. You mostly explore enclosed areas and are constantly in danger of being eaten by a dinosaur.
Special features of the game included the oppressive atmosphere that was generated. As a player, you have a constant sense of external threat.
Although Dino Crisis was rated rather average, the series apparently has a number of hardcore fans who do not want the games to be forgotten. But a continuation will probably not happen anytime soon. For now, there is Exoprimal.
At least a new co-op shooter is coming with Exoprimal. How it plays remains to be seen. If you are less interested in dinosaurs, there are still several other titles for you this year:
