Soon World of Warcraft Classic will be launched. Those who have a lot of time or have already made arrangements can play the game “for free.”
In just under a week, it will be time, then World of Warcraft Classic will start and fulfill the fans’ long-standing dream of an Azeroth as it was nearly 15 years ago. However, some returning players or newcomers might not know how the payment for WoW Classic works or that they can pay for their subscription through the “normal” WoW.
No extra costs for WoW Classic, but you need an active subscription
What does WoW Classic cost? To be able to play World of Warcraft Classic, players do not need to purchase an additional game.
World of Warcraft, as the base game with many expansions, has long been free, you only pay the subscription each month – so 11 to 13 Euros, depending on the offer.
Buy WoW tokens and thus the subscription for gold
How can you play WoW Classic for free? You need an active subscription. However, you do not necessarily have to pay for it with money.
For a while now, there has been the principle of the “WoW Token” in World of Warcraft. Players can buy a WoW Token for real money and then sell it for gold in the game. Other players pay this gold and receive a WoW Token, which they can then exchange for 30 days of gameplay time.
So, if you have a lot of gold saved up, you can use this to save your account’s subscription fees. Since there is the same subscription for both the current WoW and WoW Classic, it is possible to finance the gameplay time in Classic through the WoW Token.
If you still have gold, you can use it: It will likely be particularly worthwhile for players who still have large amounts of gold from the time of Warlords of Draenor or Legion. Here, it was easy to acquire large amounts of gold that can now come into play.
This also works if you currently have no active gameplay time left. When you log into WoW and have enough gold, you will be asked if the gold from your account should be used to pay for gameplay time. This way, inactive players can also check if they have enough gold!

What does a WoW Token cost? A single token currently costs between 180,000 and 200,000 gold pieces and is subject to daily fluctuations. The amount of gold is likely too much to be earned “on the side” by most players. Only those who are really active in the retail version of WoW are likely to earn such a sum each month.
Particularly successful players, however, also sell services, such as a particularly difficult dungeon run at a high “Mythic+” level. This way, one can earn a decent amount of gold.
Is it worth it? The answer to that is a clear “It depends.” If someone plans to play both versions of WoW in parallel, paying through the WoW Token could be quite successful. However, those who have little time or are not good at speculating with items from the auction house are likely to invest much more time and energy into the endeavor than it is ultimately worth. Then the 11 to 13 Euros per month might actually be the better investment.
