With the release of Dying Light 2 right around the corner, we take the opportunity to give you an overview of the co-op of the survival game and how it looks with a crossplay feature.
What is Dying Light 2? This is an open-world game focused on survival and action. It is the sequel to the eponymous Dying Light and places you in a zombie apocalypse.
20 years after the outbreak of a pandemic, the world is in a constant struggle for survival due to a virus. Some of the infected have turned into zombies, and hardly any place is safe from them.
The game primarily focuses on its story, side quests, and collecting resources and crafting materials in the open world. But can you also play it with friends?
Does Dying Light offer multiplayer? The short answer: Yes. Like its predecessor, Dying Light 2 has a co-op mode. So you can hunt zombies in the apocalypse together with multiple people.
We summarize all the information about the co-op mode for you here and also tell you how it works with crossplay.
Dying Light 2 offers 4-player co-op at launch, but there is a catch
This is how co-op works in Dying Light 2: At the launch of the game, you can play Dying Light 2 with three friends.
- One player serves as the host, while the others join as guests into their game world.
- All main and side missions, as well as all other activities, can be completed together except for the prologue.
- Guest players can then take the loot they found into their own game world.
Is progress carried over? Here lies the catch with the co-op mode. The story progress only applies to the host of the group. Team members must play the missions in their world themselves to complete them.
Story decisions are apparently to be voted on democratically. However, the host has a veto right, as they have to bear the consequences of the decisions.
It is currently unclear if the co-op mode will receive additional features after the release.
Does this affect the difficulty level? This is currently unknown. However, there was criticism regarding Dying Light 1 that the game became too easy in co-op mode.
Dying Light 2 has no crossplay – Not even cross-gen on console
What about crossplay? Unfortunately, you will not be able to play Dying Light 2 with players from other platforms at launch. There will be no crossplay at release.
At least on PC, the Steam and Epic Games versions can play together, so you do not have to worry there.
Console players, unfortunately, are out of luck. It will not even be possible to play together on old and new consoles. For example, if you play on PS4 and your potential co-op partner has a PS5, no co-op session is possible.
Is crossplay coming in the future? According to the developer Techland, that is quite possible. Dying Light 2 is supposed to receive extensive support after release and will be supported for over 5 years.
A first roadmap until June 2022 already exists, but there is no mention of crossplay yet. However, it is still possible that the feature will come during this time. So far, there is only a rough overview of the contents, without really going into detail.
When is the release? Dying Light 2 will be released on February 4 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4.
