Can a gaming mouse from Razer still convince 4 years after release?

Can a gaming mouse from Razer still convince 4 years after release?

Weight, ergonomics, and battery life

The weight: The Razer Basilisk Ultimate weighs 107 grams and is thus on par with the current competition:

  • The Logitech G502X Lightspeed also weighs around 100 grams.
  • The Roccat Kone XP Air also weighs around 100 grams.

The ergonomics: I have very large hands with a size of 19 centimeters. In palm grip, I find the mouse very comfortable to hold, even if I play with the model for several hours straight.

The direct competitor, the G502X Lightspeed (for the test), I personally find more pleasant and offers two more buttons in the thumb area. Additionally, the G502X has the advantage that the sniper button on the thumb side is easier to reach than the button on the Basilisk Ultimate. With the Ultimate, I can only reach that button with a lot of effort, even though I have large hands.

With Logitech, the ergonomics simply sit better and more comfortably. And I have used the old G502 Lightspeed in everyday life for as long as the Basilisk Ultimate. However, in general haptics, the Basilisk and G502 hardly differ from each other.

Battery life: The manufacturer specifies the battery life for the Basilisk Ultimate at around 100 hours. On average, I get three to four days out of it with longer gaming sessions in normal daily life. Since I place the mouse on the mouse dock at the end of the day anyway, there are regular charging cycles. Without the dock, you have to charge the mouse directly at the PC using the supplied cable.

And here is also a weakness of the mouse. Because Razer uses a micro-USB port for the Basilisk Ultimate. This is outdated from today’s perspective. The newer Razer Basilisk V3 Pro now also uses USB-C.

The mouse buttons, scroll wheel, and sensor

The mouse buttons: Under the buttons are optical switches. Razer gives the lifespan of up to 70 million clicks. In its Basilisk V3 and V3 Pro, Razer now installs the improved version of the switches, which at least in the V3 Pro still offer a longer durability of 90 million. For most players, however, that hardly matters in everyday life.

In good 2 years of use, I definitely have not reached the 70 million clicks. I haven’t had double-click issues with my model.

The scroll wheel: The scroll wheel is nicely notched and feels precise. On the back, there is also a dial with which you can adjust the strength of the scroll wheel. This way, you need more force to turn the scroll wheel. This is helpful in shooters when you have the weapon switch on the scroll wheel.

Sensor: The Basilisk Ultimate features Razer’s “Focus+” sensor, which is a derivative of the PixArt PMW 3399. With this, Razer installs a high-end sensor in its mouse. And you can feel that when you look at the mouse in practice.

Even in 2023, the sensor still convinces entirely and does not have to hide behind newer Razer models, Logitech, or Roccat.

Conclusion: Still an excellent gaming mouse in 2023

Can the Razer Basilisk Ultimate still convince in 2023? With the Basilisk Ultimate, you still get an excellent gaming mouse in 2023. You can now regularly get the mouse for under 100 euros and it is thus sometimes cheaper than the G502 Lightspeed.

If you are looking for a gaming mouse with good build quality and practical features, you can’t go wrong with the old Ultimate model even today.

Whether the extra cost of around 20 euros for the docking station is worth it must be decided by each person for themselves. I find it practical in everyday life and it looks nice, but it is definitely not a must. Also, Razer’s new mice use a new docking station, and you can no longer use the docking station of the Ultimate anyway.

What alternatives are there?

  • The Logitech G502X Lightspeed is the modern (and more expensive) alternative compared to the Basilisk Ultimate.)
  • The Razer Viper Ultimate would also be a lighter option (74 grams) but offers a shorter battery life of around 70 hours.
  • With the Roccat Kone XP (Air) or the AIMO Remastered, there are also two good options. The Kone XP is usually available for around 40 euros, while the other one would be a bit more expensive.
