The first “M” in MMORPG stands for “massive”, which is often barely obvious in many representatives of the genre. Camelot Unchained has demonstrated in a new test what kind of “massive” battles an MMORPG can really be capable of.
During “Beta One”, City State Entertainment, the developers of Camelot Unchained, invited even more people than were already playing. All players who were supposed to play only during Beta 2 were also invited to a mass battle. The fights had already been prepared for some time. The test concluded on January 26.
Camelot Unchained brings massive battles
This is how the test went: To test a mass battle, City State Entertainment sent a total of 2809 players and ARCs (Autonomous Remote Clients, i.e., bots) into a battle. They were simply supposed to fight each other.
ARCs are not just bots, but an AI that accesses the server from its own client. Thus, ARCs are not server-side deployed, but stress the connection exactly like a real player.
The characters used significantly more spells and abilities than originally planned by the developers. Nevertheless, the servers held up, even though almost 3000 characters were fighting simultaneously. City State itself comments:
This is a huge success for the team, especially considering that “500 people in the same battle at 30FPS” was the goal during our Kickstarter time. Even though there is still a lot to be done, the numbers have improved greatly compared to our old system before Beta 1.
What’s next? After the currently running Beta 1, two more beta tests will follow before Camelot Unchained is released. The launch has already been announced for 2019, but there is still no specific date.
On the website, all dates for the upcoming tests and the launch are marked as “postponed” with the note that they may still change. Therefore, it is not yet clear when exactly Camelot Unchained will be released.
