The era of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has come to an end since the release of Black Ops Cold War. However, the CoD from 2019 remains very popular. Players complain that the developers, in their opinion, are making the game worse to boost sales of the new CoD.
What is it about? Since 2005, a fresh CoD title is released each year, and at the end of the year, a new CoD cycle begins. Even the very successful Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from 2019 lost its status as “the current CoD” with the release of Black Ops Cold War in November 2020, but it still enjoys great popularity.
However, some players of the “old” CoD feel neglected. Some go even further. They say that Modern Warfare is currently being actively made worse by the developers to force the soldiers to switch to the new CoD.
A thread on reddit has now gone viral titled: “Actively making Modern Warfare a bad experience is NOT the way to increase sales for Cold War.” The topic received enormous support and was able to gather over 15,000 upvotes and more than 1,300 comments within a day (as of January 5 – 16:30).
Buyers of Modern Warfare feel like second-class players
What is the problem? The thread was created by a user with the cheeky name “Butt-Dickkiss.” He explains why CoD MW players have been suffering from neglect since the release of Cold War and how, in his view, the developers are actively making the CoD from 2019 worse than it was before Cold War:
- The playlist rotation is worse – No 24/7 Shipment or Shoot House since the CW release
- There are still many hackers roaming with their Damascus skins
- The main developer Infinity Ward has hardly given any feedback since the end of Season 6
- Ads for the new game can be found everywhere in CoD MW
- The new Battle Pass can be confusing and does not clearly show that there is hardly anything for CoD MW
- No further weapon balancing since the release of Cold War
The rather detailed protest from the player meets with much approval.
Players are particularly annoyed by the playlists
What do the players say about this? In the thread, many users comment and lead a discussion about the annual CoD cycle, the gameplay of Cold War, and the quality of content from Modern Warfare.
- Detai1s on reddit: ‘I agree. I bought Cold War but don’t like it that much. I wanted to check out CoD MW and only find these trash playlists. IW knows that players want to see Shoothouse/Shipment. But they don’t bring it because they want to force players to Cold War / Warzone.’
- stark-anium on reddit: ‘I agree with everything you say. My friends and I joked that CoD MW would decline after the release of Cold War and start with bad playlists. But now it’s no longer a joke.’
Many CoD MW players apparently feel this way. Even soldiers from Black Ops Cold War can relate to a generated “pressure”. Because even they can only unlock certain items from the Battle Pass if they start Battle Royale Warzone.
Veterans have little understanding for the complaining
Does everyone see it this way? Despite the great support and an upvote rate of 91% for the thread, there are also many users who think that the current state of the “old” CoD is quite normal.
Some make fun of the naivety of the other commenters or think that a CoD in which players only chase 2 maps can’t really be that good.

Overall, there is a noticeable frustration in the thread that stretches across all “current” CoDs:
- Players of Modern Warfare feel neglected
- Due to the strong DMR 14, many Warzoners are dissatisfied
- Cold War is a step in the wrong direction for some switchers
With the end of CoD MW and the integration of Cold War into Warzone, there have been many adjustments in Call of Duty that haven’t pleased every player. However, there are also a lot of soldiers who are satisfied with the changes.
