Clever players have found a way to make the otherwise boring and unpopular reconnaissance drones more useful in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. They have transformed them into remote-controlled mines.
Here’s how the “deadly drones” are built: Players have found a way to upgrade the reconnaissance drones from Modern Warfare a bit. They combine the drones with Claymores.
The reconnaissance drones are a Field Upgrade that players can deploy after a short charging time. The drones are then remotely controlled and are used to mark enemies.
Other players on the team can place Claymores on these drones. These remain active and can also detonate. So when the drone pilot flies their drone towards an enemy, the Claymore explodes and kills them. In the embedded video at minute 9:30, you can even see a multi-kill with it.
In the regular multiplayer modes (not realism), the drone even remains intact. Friendly fire cannot destroy your own equipment here.
Deadly Drones – Is this okay?
Here’s how players react: Most players find such actions more funny than disruptive. Even some victims of this strategy are not angry but surprised that players have found such a clever combination:
However, Claymores are considered one of the biggest points of criticism in Modern Warfare, alongside shotguns. Many fans see them as generally too strong.
The streamer DrDisrespect is so upset about Claymores that he doesn’t want to play anymore. The fact that they can be placed on drones will likely cause even more trouble.
Is the strategy “broken”? The reconnaissance drones are one of the weaker field upgrades. Anyone who takes them has to forgo strong upgrades like Dead Silence, Weapon Drop, or the Trophy System.
Additionally, the drone takes a long time to charge – longer than most upgrades. Furthermore, there are some counters against the tactic, such as:
- good sound settings to hear and locate the drone
- the perk “Recon” that allows you to see drones and Claymores through walls
- the perk “KRD” which reduces damage from Claymores
