A new installment of the “Call of Duty” series is supposed to be released in autumn. For a long time, there has been speculation about what setting it will take place in and whether it could be a reboot. These are the current rumors, but also facts.
What do we officially know about Call of Duty? So far, there have been hardly any official statements regarding the new installment of the “Call of Duty” series. It was only mentioned and confirmed during an investor call in spring 2020.
However, since the release of Modern Warfare, there have been speculations about where the game is heading and what could be hidden behind Call of Duty.
These speculations were reignited by the well-known gaming journalist Jason Schreier on April 21.
A CoD Black Ops set in the total Cold War?
What did Schreier reveal? In a discussion on Twitter, Jason Schreier, known for his insider information, revealed some details about the upcoming “Call of Duty” title.
This game is still set to be released in autumn 2020 as planned, although this could change due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Delays due to the virus have already affected games like The Last of Us Part II.
Schreier describes the upcoming title as CoD: Vietnam, although this is not supposed to be the final name. Furthermore, it is not said to be a reboot of a “Black Ops” installment, as suggested in other alleged leaks.
What do we know so far? As early as a leak from August 2019, it was said that the new CoD installment would encompass the entire Cold War, the complete 40 years. The Vietnam War would be included, but not solely in focus.
The leak also stated that the title should be more brutal and darker than Modern Warfare. Additionally, the installment is to receive a story campaign again, unlike Black Ops 4.
The game was supposedly set to run under the name Black Ops or Black Ops V and be a reboot. This would also be conceivable since parts 1 and 2 have flashback missions.

Who is developing the new CoD title? There is further discussion about the developer of the upcoming game. There is actually a cycle in which the 3 studios release new titles:
- In 2018, Treyarch released Black Ops 4.
- In 2019, Infinity Ward released Modern Warfare.
- Now Sledgehammer Games should actually be up with a title in 2020.
It is rumored that there was an internal dispute, which is why Treyarch has now taken over the upcoming title. This would argue for a new installment in the “Black Ops” series.
