The survival MMO Rust offers a long list of different items. Especially as a newcomer, it can be easy to lose track of what you actually need and what you don’t. MeinMMO presents a total of five items that you should definitely keep an eye out for.
What are these items? Here we introduce some important items that will help you in Rust. Some of them are useful throughout the entire game and will assist you in surviving. Others are meant for building your base or are needed for later in the game to raid other players.
Most of these items you probably won’t find at the beginning. However, if you do come across them, you should definitely keep them and not let them be stolen by other players.
Tip: On the rustlabs website, you can find more useful information about these items and all the others you can find in Rust.
C4 – Explosive Charges for Raiding
What is C4? The “Timed Explosive Charge,” commonly referred to as C4, is a useful item to attack another opponent’s base. It destroys built structures, allowing you to breach a base.
To use it, C4 is thrown and explodes after a short period, causing significant damage. It only hits exactly the component to which the C4 adheres.
How do I get C4? The easiest way to obtain C4 is to find it. However, the chances of that are quite low:
- 31%-chance in APC crates
- 17%-chance in helicopter crates
- 15%-chance in locked crates at the oil drilling station
- 14%-chance in locked crates and supply drops
- 3%-chance in elite crates
- 0.4%-chance as a drop from “Heavy Scientists”
Additionally, the charges can be crafted if you have the blueprint. To craft C4, you need 20 units of explosives, five pieces of cloth, and two units of tech scrap.
You generally receive blueprints when you recycle the corresponding item along with scrap at a research table. So, the first C4 you find should be used for research. The same goes for the other items in this guide.
The Best Weapons: Assault Rifle and Bolt Action Rifle
What are these weapons? Both the assault rifle (“Assault Rifle”) and the bolt action rifle (“Bolt Action Rifle”) are among the strongest weapons in Rust. The assault rifle can fire fully automatically and is still precise at medium and long ranges. The bolt action rifle is excellent for hunting or ambushes from a distance.
The assault rifle, reminiscent of an AK-47, has replaced the M4, which previously was the strongest rifle in the game. The rifles help you survive and advance into tougher areas to obtain even better loot.
The bolt action rifle is especially useful with a suppressor and a scope. This way, you have a higher chance to hit enemies without being detected.
Both weapons use 5.56mm ammunition, which is available in various variants. So, if you come across corresponding ammunition during your loot runs, it’s best to stash it until you find one of these rifles.
Where do I get them? Like C4, you can find the assault rifle and bolt action rifle most easily in crates, but again with relatively low chances.
Assault Rifle:
- 20%-chance in crates at the oil drilling station and in locked crates
- 4%-chance in elite crates (condition 10-20%)
- 1%-chance in APC and helicopter crates as well as a drop from “Heavy Scientists”
To craft it, you need 50 units of high-quality metal, 200 units of wood, four springs, and a rifle body.
Bolt Action Rifle:
- 20%-chance in locked crates at the oil drilling station and in locked crates
- 3%-chance in elite crates (condition 1-5%)
- 1%-chance in APC and helicopter crates as well as a drop from “Heavy Scientists”
To craft it, you need 20 units of high-quality metal, three metal pipes, a spring, and a rifle body.
Metal Armor for Protection
What is armor useful for? Metal armor provides the best balance between mobility and protection. It gives you a strong resistance to gunfire and melee attacks without sacrificing too much agility.
The armor consists of a head and chest piece. It’s best to combine these two with a road sign kilt to also protect the lower part of your body.
You will find or be able to craft the armor only relatively late. However, it also serves you excellently to explore tougher areas. If you only want to defend your base, you can also opt for heavy plate armor instead.

Where can I find it? Like most strong gear, you can get the metal armor best at the oil drilling station and in crates.
Metal Chest Plate:
- 31%-chance in locked crates at the oil drilling station and in locked crates
- 3%-chance in elite crates
- 1%-chance in helicopter crates
- 0.4%-chance as a drop from “Heavy Scientists”
Crafting requires 50 units of leather, 25 units of high-quality metal, and eight needles and threads.
Metal Helmet:
- 26%-chance in locked crates at the oil drilling station and in locked crates
- 3%-chance in elite crates
- 1%-chance in helicopter crates
- 0.4%-chance as a drop from “Heavy Scientists”
Crafting requires 50 units of leather, 15 units of high-quality metal, and six needles and threads.
Scrap – Important Material
What is scrap and what do I need it for? Scrap serves as a raw material for many recipes in Rust. You need it, among other things, to craft other components or even some blueprints. You also need it to upgrade your workbench.
Where do I get scrap? You can find this important resource almost everywhere. Almost every crate has a chance to reward you with a little scrap. However, there are often only small amounts to be found there.
If you need a lot of scrap quickly, you can farm it faster and more efficiently in various ways:
- recycle excess materials at outposts
- buy scrap from merchants in exchange for other materials
- visit tougher areas, as crates there usually contain more scrap

Gunpowder – Always Needed
What is gunpowder and what do I need it for? With gunpowder, you can craft all kinds of ammunition, from shotgun shells to rifle ammunition to rockets. You also need gunpowder to craft grenades and other explosives. Some materials for C4, such as explosive components, also require the black powder.
Gunpowder is one of the most important materials overall. If you find some early and can’t use it yet, definitely keep it for later in the game.
Where do I find gunpowder? Unlike scrap, gunpowder is a bit harder to find. It doesn’t just lie around in crates but can only be found in mines. However, you can get it from disassembling ammunition and explosives.
You can also mix your own gunpowder by combining sulfur and charcoal at the workbench.
The start in Rust can be quite tough, and you will probably die often before you get the hang of it. The important thing is that you learn from your mistakes and don’t get frustrated.
Rust is one of the best survival MMOs ever, and as a fan of the genre, you should definitely give it a try. If you want to look around more, you can find the 25 best survival games of 2021 in our list.
