Beginners, Gamers, and Enthusiasts – Which graphics card do I really need?
As of now (February 2023), there are 13 graphics cards from AMD that you can buy for your system. In addition to the RX 6000 series, the first RX 7000 cards have also been available since December 2022.
Beginners (Full HD)
Which graphics card for Full HD? For beginners who are gaming in Full HD, the RX 6600 XT or RX 6650 XT is currently the best recommendation in terms of price-performance ratio. AMD has now replaced the RX 6600 XT with its successor. The RX 6650 XT provides sufficient performance for high frame rates and also enough reserves for future top games.
If you want to save money, you could alternatively opt for the RX 6500 XT, which is currently the best option under 200 Euros. However, you need to be aware that this graphics card offers fewer features and its performance can be rather weak. Moreover, the controversial RX 6500 XT only offered 4 GB of video memory. Currently, there is also an option with 8 GB available. Therefore, it is really only a budget option. We would definitely advise against the weak RX 6400.
Gamers (Full HD, 144 Hz or WQHD)
Which graphics card for Full HD 144Hz? If you want to play in Full HD at 144 Hz or primarily in WQHD, we recommend the RX 6700 XT. Here, you get a fair offer for a cost of around 500 Euros with sufficient performance. The RX 6750 costs about 80 Euros more, which only makes sense for the 4% additional performance.
If you currently do not know whether you want to use 4K in the future, we recommend the RX 6800. This card offers plenty of power for WQHD but also has reserves for 4K.
Enthusiasts (WQHD, 144 Hz or 4K, 60 Hz)
Which graphics card for 4K 60 Hz? With the RX 6800 XT, you can play well in 4K. However, you should be aware that you won’t achieve three-digit FPS values in new games. Prices range from 650 to 700 Euros.
If you want to fully utilize 4K, you should go straight for the new RX 7000 series. For around 900 Euros, you currently get the RX 7900 XT, which is the most sensible recommendation if you’re looking for an AMD graphics card for 4K gaming at stable 60 FPS in the highest settings.
The RX 7900 XTX is currently too expensive at around 1,200 Euros and is therefore only conditionally recommendable.

Buying a graphics card – tips before the purchase
Before purchasing a graphics card, you should already have some thoughts in mind. Otherwise, you might spend a lot of money and regret the expensive investment later. Or you might find yourself regretting that your new GPU is too weak and you have to buy another one in 2 years.
- How much money do I want to spend on the system?
- Screen resolution
- Refresh rate
- Space and power supply
- Ray tracing and DLSS
- Which games?
Budget question
You should be certain from the start about how much money you want to spend on your system. Because the finished PC consists not only of a graphics card but also of the processor, RAM, and so on. If you combine a high-end graphics card with an entry-level processor, you will lose a lot of performance.
Screen resolution
In which resolution do you currently play and how does it look like for you in the future? The resolution determines how much performance you will need. The higher the resolution, the more pixels your graphics card has to calculate, and the more your GPU will strain. The most common resolutions are:
- Full HD (1,920×1,080)
- WQHD (2,560×1,440)
- 4K (3,840×2,160)
Refresh rate (FPS)
Also important is how many FPS you want to play at. 60 FPS is the absolute minimum that we would recommend for gaming in 2023. Many games, such as shooters, do not look smooth below 60 FPS. The more FPS you want to achieve, the more performance you need.
A high resolution combined with high FPS requires a significantly faster graphics card than if you only want to play in Full HD at 60 FPS.
Space and power
Every graphics card needs space in the computer. Additionally, the power supply must be strong enough. Pay attention to this before purchasing, or you may buy a graphics card that is too large for your case, or you will have to buy a more powerful power supply afterwards. This can also impact your budget.
You can find important information in the manual of your case, such as the maximum size of the graphics card. You should not overlook the case when planning a PC.
Ray tracing and DLSS
Since the RX 6000 series, AMD graphics cards also offer ray tracing. However, the performance with ray tracing is still somewhat weaker than with Nvidia. With FSR, AMD has also introduced an alternative to Nvidia’s DLSS, but Nvidia currently still holds a slight advantage.
If you definitely do not want to do without ray tracing or DLSS, you need to opt for an Nvidia graphics card. If these features are only optional for you, you can easily buy an AMD graphics card.
Which games do you want to play?
Be aware of which games you want to play. If you only play indie games or classics from 10 years ago, you do not need a high-end graphics card. On the other hand, if you want to play competitive shooters or current top titles, you cannot avoid getting a good and fast model.
Further questions: FAQ about AMD graphics cards
Yes, if you want to play regularly, you need a graphics card.
As of now (February 2023), there are 13 graphics cards. These are divided into the RX 6000 series and RX 7000 series.
The RX 7900 XTX. It is currently the fastest (and most expensive) graphics card from AMD for gamers.
The Radeon RX 6800. It offers enough performance for Full HD, WQHD, and reserves for 4K. You can currently get this graphics card for around 600 Euros.
Yes, starting with the RX 6000 series, AMD GPUs can do ray tracing, but the performance is slightly lower than Nvidia.
Yes, you can also play simple indie games or titles that are several years old with AMD Radeon Graphics. For modern games, we would recommend a ‘real’, dedicated GPU.
The RX 6700 XT. It is also sufficient for Full HD and 144 Hz and has enough performance for WQHD.
The RX 6600. Sometimes you can get the RX 6650 XT for just under 300 Euros, and you should opt for such a model.
The RX 6500 XT. This is currently the only graphics card from AMD that you can buy for under 200 Euros, suitable for gaming in Full HD. The RX Radeon 6400 is often already too weak for gaming.
