Fans have suspected for months that Bungie might bring back Cayde-6 after all. And now they actually are, but he will return as a comic character, not to the game Destiny 2.
So Cayde-6 returns after all: Bungie has announced the release of a webcomic: “Cayde’s Six”.
This comic will tell the story of how Cayde-6 chases the Fallen Barons of the Tangled Shore with a crew of “headstrong daredevils”.
The comic is set to be released on November 29 – also in German. Bungie claims it is not a tragedy, but an adventure packed with action.
Cayde-6, Chronicle of an Announced Death
Here is the backstory: To promote the new expansion “Forsaken” for Destiny 2, Bungie announced long before release that the popular character “Cayde-6” would die at the beginning of the expansion.
In a story trailer at E3 in early June, the tragic fate of Cayde-6 was revealed, months before players could experience it themselves.
Cayde-6 is killed during the prison break by the 8 Barons and Uldren Sov, as they first take out his ghost and then him. Thus, the final death of an apparently immortal Guardian like Cayde-6 became possible.
This is Cayde-6: Cayde-6 is a gunslinger and the leader of the Hunter Vanguard. He is voiced in English by TV star Nathan Fillion.
In recent years, Cayde-6 became the star of Destiny – his rise began with “The Taken King”. While Cayde-6 was just an extra before, he became one of the most important figures in the Destiny universe.
This is why fans doubted his death for a long time: Many fans therefore did not believe Bungie that Destiny would permanently part ways with Cayde-6. They saw the death as a PR stunt. After all, Cayde-6 was so popular and prominently voiced by Nathan Fillion.
Destiny had already gained a reputation for making big announcements in trailers that turned out to be not as significant in the game: such as with the “Loss of Light” at the beginning of Destiny 2. Guardians had actually regained that after a short time in the game.
Many Guardians were sure that Bungie would revive the gunslinger during Forsaken: perhaps as Cayde-7 or through another narrative twist.
So did that really happen? Indeed, Cayde-6 died at the beginning of the “Forsaken” expansion – just as announced. The dramatic downfall of Cayde-6 provided the characters of Destiny and the player himself with the motivation to take down the villains. His death provided the fuel for the plot.
Cayde-6 did not return during Forsaken. Let’s see if his adventures as a webcomic can convince the fans.
