The developers of Destiny 2 are really sweating right now, but not because of work on Destiny 2. This time, you can’t really blame them for leaving the action MMO aside, even though there’s a lot to do.
Just outside the gates of frosty Canada lies the quaint Bellevue in the state of Washington. Here is also Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2, based. But recently, a meteorological anomaly has hindered the development of the action MMO and provides Bungie with the perfect excuse to kick back for a while.
- June shines up in the northern USA with a summery average temperature of a maximum of 25 °C – on cool days even just 13 °C.
- But for the last 3 days, a heat wave has rolled over Seattle and the surrounding cities like Bellevue, where Bungie HQ is located (via Washintgonpost.com).
- Weather services report up to 113 °Fahrenheit – which is about 45 °Celsius. Absolute heat record for the region. (via Currentresults.com).
Bungie is taking a heat break. The developers announced this on Twitter:
The developers of Destiny 2 are taking a heat break today because the PCs are overheating
Bungie’s Community Manager Dylan “dmg04” Gaffner complains about unreasonable working conditions: His laptop has nearly burned out and has shut down due to overheating … directly twice. He explains the most important point: “That’s not good”.
But don’t worry too much about Gaffner, since he moved into the bedroom with all his fans, it’s a bit better (via Twitter).
What sounds funny is anything but cool. Bungie has only recently partially returned to the office from home office. Due to the Covid pandemic, the next expansion “Witch Queen” was already postponed from the end of 2021 to early 2022.
This work method has drawn criticism: Okay, the current heat wave in Washington won’t have as much impact on the development of Destiny 2 as the global crisis will.
But many players have accused Bungie of an inefficient working style for years. Bungie is known for avoiding overtime and crunch, and the employees are supposed to feel comfortable here. However, this has caused some Guardians to vent nasty comments over the years, saying “they are lazy”.
We read statements like these under the heat break Twitter posts of Bungie employees:
- “In Australia, offices don’t close at such temperatures, don’t you have a working air conditioning?” (via Twitter)
- “I’m from Texas – 100 °F are normal” (via Twitter)
- Other users joke that Telesto has something to do with it and is now also causing glitches in real life, which the Community Manager confirms – who else, if not the game-breaking exotic, could break Bungie itself? (via Twitter)
Especially the servers, the buggy season launches, and the missing content continually lead to accusations. The lack of love for PvP sparked a small revolt. When Bungie recently announced that 12 more weapons are coming to Destiny 2, but it turned out that they were old guns with revised perks, it caused outrage among the Guardians. Yes, this is typically Bungie if you want to be snarky.
But let’s be honest, anyone used to maximum temperatures of 25 °C and suddenly having to deal with 45 °C deserves a day off. After all, the Destiny servers have so far withstood the temperatures – just like Telesto wants.
We wish the developers at Bungie a quick cooldown and that normalcy returns to HQ soon. And who knows, as Bungie is currently expanding – even to Europe – Luke Smith (in the title image) and colleagues may soon be able to develop mercilessly even in the high summer: Destiny 2 is getting a new boss, a huge new headquarters, and is coming to Europe.
How do you cope with such temperatures, does Destiny 2 provide cooling for you or do you understand that one must take a siesta? If you want to keep your opponents cool from overheating, here’s how it works: Destiny 2: Try the strong build for the endgame – According to a pro “too good for PvE”
