In the MMO shooter Destiny 2, developer Bungie categorizes players into three different types. What type of player are you?
In a recent Bungie podcast, the grandmasters of Destiny 2 discussed their game and the current issues. It was revealed that Bungie internally assumes there are three types of players:
- The Tourist is just visiting the Destiny universe. He plays for some hours, might reach the max level or finish the campaign, but then he’s gone again.
- The Collector is more active. He finishes the campaign and then attempts various endgame activities. He tries things here and there, completes some activities. He spends about 80-100 hours with the game.
- The Hobbyist, on the other hand, sees Destiny as part of his lifestyle. For him, Destiny is one of his favorite activities to spend his free time. He expects a lot from the game and wants to fully enjoy it. The social connections he makes in the game are also very important to him.
Destiny 2 too tourist-friendly
Bungie has found in their analysis that Destiny 2 has catered too much to tourists and has provided too few reasons for hobbyists to log in regularly. It is said that hardcore players need a “pretext” to spend time in Destiny 2. That is currently lacking.
Due to Destiny 2’s accessibility and the fact that even players with relatively little time investment could obtain all items, it seems that Destiny 2 is missing something that was present in the first part.
Bungie has assured that future updates will again focus more on hobbyists and will align Destiny 2 stronger to their needs.
