Bungie is constantly seeking new talents for the development of upcoming projects. One of these talents was Derick Tsai, a former employee of Disney. He was supposed to advance Destiny 2 and establish the brand in other media such as TV series or comics, but the plans have changed.
Who is Derick Tsai? He is a Senior Development Executive with more than 15 years of professional experience. His specialty is building global entertainment franchises and universes in well-known media (animation, gaming, film, TV, streaming, comics, publishing).
This included Bungie with Destiny. Derick was hired in January 2022 as Sr. Development Executive | Head of Destiny Universe Transmedia, but he left Bungie quietly in March 2023.
Bungie wants to expand Destiny, loses its head of Transmedia after 15 months
What is Bungie’s plan? Destiny 2 has great potential to exist outside of gaming with its story and characters in the universe. Bungie has recognized this and wants to further develop the brand. Fans speculated if Bungie is secretly working on a TV series that would address stories within the Destiny universe.
Various talents, including Derick Tsai, may have been recruited to work for Bungie and perform creative tasks in the team. And although Tsai was promising and even worked for Disney and Riot, his time at Bungie ended in March 2023 without any statement.
The interesting thing is that in his LinkedIn professional experience (via linkedin.com), a Forbes article is linked about “anime series for Destiny 2” (via forbes.com). This could indicate that Derick worked on such a project that is still officially secret.
A teaser of what the community can expect? The article by Paul Tassi basically discusses what the community has theorized – a series about Destiny. According to Tassi, however, Bungie might be working on an anime instead of a TV series with real people. It is quite possible that Derick Tsai has taken the Forbes article as a teaser to draw attention to something that might be released in the future.
One thing is clear, Bungie has a talent for illustrating the story in its seasons of Destiny 2. Background stories like that of Saint-14 or Zavala have often been portrayed in this format and were well received by the community. It is quite possible that Bungie is planning an anime in this form.
What do you think of the idea? Do you believe Bungie is still working on a series after the departure of Derick Tsai, or do you think the developers are planning something bigger? Let us know in the comments!
