Some players in World of Warcraft are currently experiencing a curious bug that resets characters to the state of Cataclysm or Mists of Pandaria, or even makes some of them completely disappear. Blizzard is already working on a solution.
What’s going on? Some players from the Khadgar server are currently affected by a curious bug that resets their characters from level 120 to level 85. That was the maximum level in 2010 in Cataclysm, one of the four worst expansions of WoW. For some, even the gear, mounts, and achievements have been reset to that time.
Other players report completely disappeared characters or ones that reappeared after being deleted. Some clones of existing characters are also said to have suddenly appeared. This seems to mainly affect characters that underwent a name change after Cataclysm.
Player MadSeasonShow summarized his experiences with character selection in a short video:
The reddit user VegetaPrime34 even reports that his guild has already defeated 11 of the 12 bosses in the latest raid and was close to becoming the first guild to complete the content on Khadgar.
However, they now have to take a raid break. Their main tank has suddenly completely disappeared, and a warlock is now at level 90 with gear from Mists of Pandaria.
This story sounds funny already, but over the years, some bugs have been introduced to the game that have also caused many laughs. We have collected the 5 funniest bugs for you here.
Are the server connections to blame?
What caused the error? Some players on reddit and the forums suspect that old backups from the time of Cataclysm and MoP somehow made it into the game files. This created the current chaos.
Khadgar seems to be the only affected server. It was linked with the Thrall server on September 17. Something may have gone wrong in that process.
What does Blizzard say? Blizzard reacted quickly and has already published multiple statements on the issue. Early on, they promised that no character would be lost. It is now said that they fully understand the problem and will resolve it:
We have reached a point where we fully understand the issue, and we will continue to work on resolving it. Players who are missing characters or whose levels have been lowered should see initial progress as early as tonight [in the night of September 23 to 24, German time].
As this process will take an unknown amount of time, it may take longer than tonight to be completed.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. We will keep you updated here if the situation changes.
