It is actually quite unusual in Destiny 2 to be picked off by an invader in Gambit. However, this brazen player does not even respect the safe zone. He kills the opposing team before the match has even started.
Typically, an invader in Gambit has the most important task. He makes it harder for the other team and gives his own team time to eliminate opponents easily. But such audacity has never been displayed by any invader in Destiny 2. Before the match has even begun, he hacks into the opposing team’s safe zone and kills them.
This action is not only mean and unfair, but also actually impossible:
- The safe zone serves as a starting point and separates both teams by an energy barrier.
- Shooting or grenades can be used, but they are ineffective against the opposing team.
- Neither team has power ammo at the start of the match. It only becomes available during gameplay.
The user Rustypipboy posted a video on Reddit that breaks all these rules. Neither the energy barrier, the lack of power ammo, nor his own morals stop the obvious Gambit cheater from starting immediately.
The video shows how brazen the cheater is
In the video, you can see the players preparing for the Gambit match. Rustypipboy goes through his loadout again when he suddenly takes damage. After zapping from his inventory, he is already dead. Just as unexpectedly, his teammates are hit as well. After the action, the brazen Gambit cheater portends himself joyfully out of the safe zone.
This is how Gambit is supposed to go:
This cannot be a bug: In Gambit, no one has power ammo at the start of the game. So, even if the energy barrier were buggy and a player somehow manages to reach the opposing team’s safe zone, he would have no power ammo there. However, the video shows that the cheater is using the exotic machine gun Xenophage and clearly has enough ammo to shoot around happily.
Without illegal manipulation of the game, such a thing is actually impossible. The fact that the player ports suggests a brazen cheater.
The brazen cheater has since been banned: Since Rustypipboy subtly exposes the cheater through his reddit post, his profile has been increasingly reported for cheating. This has evidently led to him being banned from the game. His Bungie profile no longer exists. However, one must wonder why cheaters continue to slip through the cracks of anti-cheat?
Why doesn’t the anti-cheat in Destiny 2 work?
Since the Destiny 2 update 3.3.0 in August 2021, BattlEye has been watching over the honor and morals of all Destiny 2 players, alongside Bungie, as anti-cheat protection. Over the last 17 years, the system has proven to be highly effective and is used by many other competitive shooter franchises, including Fortnite, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and Rainbow Six.
Cheaters slip through the cracks: Initially, Bungie tested BattlEye during the first few weeks and manually reviewed players banned by the system. However, the system now operates independently. It worked well at the beginning and was felt in the game. Nevertheless, cheaters seem to be slipping through the cracks more regularly, even with full protection. Much to the annoyance of honest Destiny 2 players.
Cheaters will always be a problem
Cheat providers have had enough time to test Destiny 2’s new system and, thanks to Free2Play, have conducted extensive tests with it. Cheat subscription services even offer updates to inform their unscrupulous customers about the status of cheats. This way, cheaters are always informed whether their cheats are “safe” or “unsafe” to use. The business with Destiny 2 cheats continues to thrive. Even BattlEye cannot prevent this.
Cheaters vs. developers is an ongoing battle: Detecting and banning cheaters is not a static task. It is like a never-ending chess game where one is always on the move. Luckily, there are significantly fewer cheaters now that BattlEye walks by the “chess table” regularly.
Why do some players in Destiny 2 simply disregard morality and continue to cheat at the risk? Is it pressure to succeed? Do they feel they are not good enough for the game? Especially long-time players can instantly recognize when something is wrong. A 50 kill streak in PvP from a cheater is therefore worthless. Everyone knows that he must have cheated for that. Or do they just want to play relaxed and are willing to pay money for it?
