At the Game Awards 2024, a new trailer for Borderlands 4 was shown, finally hinting at parts of the new story. The trailer recalls a prophecy made 10 years ago, which was ignored in Borderlands 3.

What can be seen in the new trailer? At the Game Awards 2024, a new trailer for Borderlands 4 was presented, giving us not just a first glimpse of Vault Hunters, environment, and gameplay, but also an initial insight into the possible story.
In the trailer, we see 2 factions charging at each other with an army. The first army full of Borderlands psychos is led by a robot woman with huge metal arms.
On the other side, there is a man in a suit leading an army of masked soldiers who all look the same. By the end of the trailer, only the man stands before a Vault Gate.

Will the end of Pre-Sequel finally be continued?
Borderlands 4 could finally connect to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. The new trailer for Borderlands 4 also hints at events from Pre-Sequel. In the first reveal trailer, the moon Elpis was visible.
Pre-Sequel was actually a prequel to part 2, showing how Jack later became the villain. There are also scenes from the present, featuring the character Athena, known from the Borderlands 1 DLC The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. In Pre-Sequel, she was one of the playable Vault Hunters.
At the end of Pre-Sequel, we see how Lilith wants to shoot her because Athena helped Jack. However, Athena is saved by a Watcher. The Watcher is an Eridian creature associated with the Vaults. The Watcher explains: War is coming. And you need every Vault Hunter you can get.
In later DLCs for Pre-Sequel, this is not picked up again, and the 3rd part does not connect to it either. There, you fight against the Calypso Twins. One cannot really speak of a war in that context. Athena also does not make an appearance in Borderlands 3.
The status of the main characters is uncertain
The trailer for Borderlands 4 now hints at a war. This is clearly seen in the 2 factions waging war with small armies. The return of old Vault Hunters is also featured, in the trailer we see an older version of Zane, who could be played in Borderlands 3.
However, neither Lilith nor Athena is present in the video. Athena should still be alive in the world of Borderlands. Lilith’s situation is a bit more unclear. She sacrificed herself at the end of Borderlands 3, but it is unknown if she is really dead.
It is also unclear which factions are involved in the trailer for part 4. The psychos seem to be controlled by the robot woman through masks, and the mysterious man does not appear to be the classic Borderlands CEO, as he seemingly has magical powers as well. However, you won’t have to wait long for new information, as the game will be released in 2025.
