Borderlands 4 is one of the hottest gaming releases of 2025. The developers have now surprisingly moved the release date forward – which could impact the entire gaming industry.

In a now-deleted post on X, Randy Pitchford, head of Borderlands 4, announced that the release of the highly anticipated loot shooter will be moved forward. Borderlands 4 is now set to release on September 12, 2025. The video has since been re-uploaded on X.
In another post on the official Borderlands account, the developers explain that the decision to move the release date forward was made after careful consideration, along with many meetings, playtesting, and development work.
Furthermore, there will be a PlayStation State of Play tomorrow, on April 30, 2025, at 11 PM our time, focused entirely on Borderlands.

What does this mean for other developers? The news that Borderlands 4 is moving its release date up by two whole weeks will likely be received very differently in developer and publisher circles – but because of a completely different game.
Because almost the entire gaming industry is currently eagerly anticipating GTA 6. Even the biggest publishers fear the release of what is likely the biggest game of all time and are trying to stay as far away from it as possible.
Since Borderlands 4, like GTA 6, belongs to Take-Two, the planned release at the end of September was a kind of barometer for the gaming industry: It was assumed that Take-Two would not interfere with itself and would plan its titles accordingly with some air. Therefore, a GTA release was expected only in late autumn.
For this reason, some developers scheduled their release as close as possible to Borderlands 4. The action-adventure Ghost of Yotei seemed safe with its planned release on October 2. But now it’s quite possible that GTA 6 is also planning a release in October.
Although the two games could hardly be more different in genre, they both rely on an open world and many players will not take on two such large games in one month. After all, the former head of GTA knows that the day doesn’t suddenly gain more hours.
It will also be interesting for Bungie, who planned to release their new shooter Marathon on the same day as Borderlands 4. At first glance, that seemed risky since Borderlands, as a loot shooter, is attractive to Destiny fans.
