More and more details about the endgame of Borderlands 3 are being released. Gearbox Software has now introduced the new Mayhem mode, which is supposed to enrich the endgame with randomness and more challenge. Here’s what’s in it.
Story completed – what’s next? Even after you have traveled the galaxy, eliminated countless enemies, and completed the story of Borderlands 3, there should still be plenty for the Vault Hunters to do – specifically in the endgame. The hunt for the best loot really starts there.
Part of the endgame will include
- the True Vault Hunter Mode, essentially a kind of New Game Plus
- as well as the Guardian Ranks, a revised Badass Rank system that was already used in Borderlands 2

What’s in the Mayhem mode of Borderlands 3
What is Mayhem all about? This mode is supposed to provide more variety and a greater challenge in the endgame with random elements and different difficulty levels.
How and when can you play Mayhem? Once you have completed the story of Borderlands 3, you will be able to activate a mysterious terminal aboard Sanctuary III. This will allow you to start this new mode.
What makes Mayhem unique:
- When you activate Mayhem through the terminal, you have three difficulty levels to choose from – Tier 1 to 3
- The higher the level, the greater the risks: enemies will have more health, stronger shields, and armor.
- The higher the Mayhem tier, the better the rewards: you will receive bonus cash, Eridium, additional XP, and have the chance for better loot
- Mayhem also activates various random modifiers on all planets you visit. For instance, with Savage, enemies deal more weapon damage. With Wizard, your normal bullets deal less damage, while your elemental damage increases. This forces you to rethink, use new strategies, and adopt a dynamic play style.
- The active mods will be displayed on the map view
- Some mods will only activate at Tier 2 or 3 and will make your life hell there
What you should consider with Mayhem: It is recommended to start Mayhem on Tier 1 and equip yourself with better gear before trying a harder difficulty level. If you jump straight to Tier 3 at the beginning, it’s essentially a certain death sentence. Mayhem offers more Bad Asses and tougher enemies. In short: everything gets significantly harder. However, this is offset by better gear that can buff your skills – even class-specific ones.
