A cancer-stricken fan of Borderlands was granted another wish. He gets his own weapon in Borderlands 3.
Several weeks ago, we reported that a cancer-ill fan had already gotten a sneak peek at Borderlands 3. Doctors had assessed Trevor Eastman’s life expectancy as very low. It is likely that he will not experience the launch of Borderlands 3.
But a developer from Borderlands 3 has now reached out to the fan again and granted him another wish: he was allowed to name a weapon in the game and even choose the red “Flavor Text” for the gun.
This is the weapon: In Borderlands 3, there will be a weapon called “Compressing Trevonator.” It is a legendary gun from Maliwan that can switch between the elements Cryo and Fire. It also has a significantly increased splash damage radius and charges faster. The chosen red flavor text is:
“Trev is gunna get you!”
Where was this revealed? On Reddit, Trevor informed other fans about the incident himself. There he writes that a person from Gearbox had allowed him to do this. He further states:
“I am really happy and amazed at how kind they have been to me and it really means the world to me that they allowed me this. I wish I could somehow pay them back for what they have done for me… and also you all, because you helped make this dream come true.”
This refers to Trevor’s original opportunity to play Borderlands 3 in advance, as numerous players on Reddit helped bring him to the developers’ attention.
The community is moved and excited: The reactions of other users on Reddit are mostly positive. Most are happy that Trevor is getting his own weapon. Some are already making promises that they will “farm for as long as it takes to get the weapon and then only play with it.”
Overall, the whole action seems to be a win-win situation for those involved. Trevor receives recognition in the game and Gearbox gets some pretty positive PR in return.
What is your opinion on such an honor? Is it a nice gesture and just lovely? Or should developers rather avoid such things?
The predecessor, Borderlands 2, might still be getting a DLC…
