Many of you have probably completed the first DLC for Borderlands 3 by now. It’s time to look ahead: What could the next DLCs bring?
That was DLC 1: “Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot” sent our Vault Hunters to the Space Casino. The casino built by Handsome Jack awaited with a unique setting and brought back many familiar elements from previous entries in the series. Among other things, players faced Loader Bots and met Jack doppelganger Timothy, who you might remember from the Pre-Sequel.
This is how the DLC was received: The first expansion was an absolute hit. Players responded extremely positively to the DLC, praising the setting and the new content. This gives hope for the future: What could be in the upcoming DLCs?
3 Story expansions are coming – what can players expect?
This is what the DLC plan looks like: The Season Pass still contains a total of 3 story expansions. What they will include is still completely unknown. However, it is certain that they are all set to be released by September 2020. So the next one shouldn’t be too far away. The developers have already announced that they want to release the roadmap for 2020 in January.
What will ultimately be in the DLCs is still uncertain. However, there have already been a few hints – and fans also have clear ideas about what they want to see.
Will there be new Vault Hunters?
As for the Vault Hunters: Last year, Gearbox already stated that they do not plan to introduce new Vault Hunters as DLC. This contrasts with previous titles that added new classes later on. In Borderlands 3, it seems that Zane, Amara, FL4K, and Moze will remain the only options.
However, it is possible that the Vault Hunters will receive new skill trees. After all, it is assumed that the max level will be raised in the future – new skills for distributing experience points would be useful. Therefore, it is quite possible that no new Vault Hunters will be added, in order to create new variations for the 4 current protagonists.
What could the setting look like?
Where will we go next? The first DLC sent the Vault Hunters to a location that did not exist at all in the main game. The glittering casino represented a completely new location that also noticeably differed from everything we have seen in the game so far.
If it is assumed that future DLCs will follow the same approach, then the imagination knows no bounds. However, Anthony Nicholson, the Head DLC Producer for Borderlands 3, already clarified that not every DLC will lead to new planets: “It always comes down to gameplay. I think it isn’t necessarily necessary to always add a new planet,” Nicholson said.
It is possible that one or more of the upcoming DLCs will take place in familiar territories. Especially Athenas was highlighted by Nicholson again – an area the team would like to expand. However, it is certain that there will be new loot in every DLC – no matter where the journey leads.
What do the fans wish for? Looking around on reddit, there are already many wishes that players have expressed regarding DLCs. One that keeps coming up is a remake of a Borderlands 2 DLC. This is “Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep.”
Fans of the series among you will remember: In that DLC, Tiny Tina brought out her own version of “Dungeons & Dragons,” called “Bunkers & Badasses.” Here, the Vault Hunters suddenly found themselves in a fantasy setting and had to face dragons, wizards, dwarves, and other creatures.
A remake of the setting would likely be well received. However, one could also create a new variant – for example, by throwing the Borderlands 3 Vault Hunters into a Western setting, a space horror setting, or something similar.
Another DLC that often appears in the wishes for new content is “Claptastic Voyage” from the Pre-Sequel. In this one, players landed in the brain of the robot Claptrap – and it got pretty wild. The DLC not only introduced a new story but also a new weapon rarity. Perhaps something like that is also conceivable for Borderlands 3?
Which characters will play a role?
Who will we meet in the DLCs? Already in the main campaign, we encounter a variety of familiar characters. Players will also meet familiar faces in the DLC. Which characters could take the spotlight in the future?
The first option is the Siren student Ava. The character, who is somewhat unpopular in the community, takes on an important role at the end of the Borderlands 3 story. The developers hinted in the Borderlands Show that Ava may play a larger role in upcoming expansions. Perhaps a good opportunity to let the character shine a bit more than in the main story.
But characters from the previous entries could also make an appearance. The characters Rhys and Vaughn from “Tales from the Borderlands” have already made it prominently into the main game. However, the sisters Fiona and Sasha are still missing – and could play a larger role in future DLCs.
Also noticeably absent was the Psycho Krieg, who was playable in Borderlands 2. The insane Vault Hunter, who constantly battles within himself, only appeared in Borderlands 3 in the form of ECHO logs. His connection to the Siren Maya could also become interesting (no spoilers here, in case you are reading this article even though you haven’t completed the story yet). The fan-favorite could be a good candidate for upcoming DLCs.
Speaking of fan-favorites: The Mechromancer class Gaige was also absent. At least for now. Upon release, Paul Sage emphasized that there were too many NPCs to spend time with – and thus no room for Gaige. However, he left the door open for DLC at that time. Therefore, fans of Gaige still have hope.
