Just before the best quest in Wrath of the Lich King Classic , Blizzard explicitly warns. Those who can should skip an important piece of Warcraft history.
The launch of Wrath of the Lich King Classic went relatively smoothly, but there are some annoying problems. Long wait times on some realms spoil the fun, and now there’s this: The popular quest line “Battle for Undercity” is full of bugs and cannot be completed in many cases.
Worse still: Your character could get stuck in a phase where it simply cannot proceed. Hence, the appeal from Blizzard: Please do not attempt to complete this quest!
What kind of quest line is this? The “Battle for Undercity” is one of the major historical highlights in World of Warcraft. Sometimes also called the “Wrathgate” quest line, it involves a significant conflict between Horde and Alliance as well as a drastic crime by the Forsaken.
In the fight against Arthas and the undead Scourge, there is a joint assault by the Horde and Alliance on the Icecrown Citadel. However, the Forsaken apothecaries betray all sides and unleash plague upon the Alliance, Horde, and the Scourge. There are numerous deaths on all sides, including heroes like young Saurfang or Bolvar Fordragon.
Sylvanas denies any involvement in the betrayal by the apothecaries and shifts the blame to the dreadlord Varimathras and a solo act by apothecary Putress. The Horde and Alliance then march into battle to conquer Undercity, which is currently in the hands of the apothecaries. This very scenario is available to play there.
What is the problem with the quest? It is apparently not a single problem, but several. Most often, it seems that the scenario “The Battle for Undercity” simply does not proceed past a certain point. There is no way to complete the quest, and players are stuck in this phase.
While Alliance players can only unsatisfiedly abandon the quest and leave the scenario, the consequences can be more severe for Horde players. According to Blizzard, it is particularly problematic for the Horde, as “this quest step puts characters in a phase they cannot escape from, which also affects vendors and trainers in Undercity and Orgrimmar.”
When will there be a permanent solution?? That is still unclear. Blizzard is already working on a short-term fix, which is only a temporary workaround. Within the next day, characters should have the option to simply skip the event in Undercity. At the same time, it should be ensured that everyone who skips the quest can catch up on it later.
Blizzard says in the official WoW forum:
It breaks our hearts to ask our players to skip this iconic content, and we will do everything we can to implement a comprehensive solution as quickly as possible to provide a more reliable player experience for those playing this quest for the first time, and to give players who were forced to skip it a way to catch up on it. But we cannot currently estimate when we will be able to offer a complete fix.
Blizzard’s main goal is, of course, to make the event error-free. However, that may still take a while and will probably “not happen in the next few days.” There are many problems coming together, and their resolution has likely been worsened by the increased number of characters per realm.
Those looking forward to the legendary “Battle for Undercity” quest line should be a bit more patient – or take the risk of spending a very, very long time in Undercity.
