In the past seasons of Diablo 4 there have been overpowered builds that were nerfed only with major patches. Blizzard announced that they will handle this differently in the future and rather put a stop to it. However, the upcoming update mainly brings buffs. We summarize the highlights from the patch notes for patch 2.2.1.
These are the highlights from the patch:
- Even in Season 8, there are really strong builds that can wipe everything out easily even at high torment levels. Although Blizzard announced that they would act faster against OP builds in the future – patch 2.2.1 does not contain any nerfs, but some buffs instead.
- After the patch, you can exchange your collected “Spectral Ash” with Sayeena for Oath Scrolls. With the scrolls, you increase your reputation with the Oath of the Revealer – your seasonal progress.
- The boss power “Belial’s Eye Rays” will also be revised, as the modifier has not reliably triggered “Overwhelm” so far.
In addition, the update brings a whole series of bug fixes. Patch 2.2.1 will be released on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, as community manager Adam Fletcher explains on X. The detailed German patch notes can be found on page 2 of the article. This time, they are not quite as extensive.
Patch 2.2.1 brings buffs for all classes
How are the builds being buffed? Blizzard emphasized that OP builds should be weakened as quickly as possible – so that players do not invest a lot of time and effort in builds that later become hardly useful. However, the upcoming patch only brings buffs – especially strong builds that dominate the tier lists will thus remain.
The Barbarians can look forward to buffs for Whirlwind builds, as the “Aspect of the Horrifying Whirlwind” will be strengthened. The unique gloves “Gohrs Devastating Grasp” will also receive an upgrade – Blizzard speaks of up to 100% more damage.
For the Druids, there are mainly buffs for their central passive skills, such as “Earthen Power” and “Perfect Storm”. Necromancer will benefit from buffs to their Skeleton Priests – their damage bonus will be increased. In addition, the new 2H sword “Sanguivor, Zirs Blade” from Season 8 will receive a boost: the summoning damage will increase from 60% to 400%.
The Hunters will receive a damage upgrade for their poison trap – from 540% to 612%. The corresponding unique gloves “Band of the Ichor Rose” will also be buffed. Sorceresses get a change for “Shocking Effect” – the control skill now triggers when the enemy is stunned again.
The Spiritborn will receive buffs for the “The Protector” skill, but also for passive skills, including “Adaptive Stances” and “Critical Strikes”.
Boss Power could become interesting for “Overwhelm Builds”
Alongside numerous bug fixes, the boss power “Belial’s Eye Rays” is also being adjusted. If you have equipped the skill as a modifier, you achieve stealth when activating your main boss power and deal increased overwhelm damage. However, according to Blizzard, the latter has not been reliably triggered. Additionally, the bonus will last 2 seconds after entering stealth in the future.
Among the best builds in Season 8, many utilize Overwhelm as a core mechanic for damage. The adjustment of the boss power could make them even more interesting for builds that build on this mechanic.
What do Sayeena’s Oath Scrolls bring? With patch 2.2.1, Sayeena becomes a merchant. Currently, she is your contact person when it comes to the seasonal questline. You can exchange your “Spectral Ash” with her for Oath Scrolls – thereby increasing your reputation with the Oath of the Revealer. Currently, the ash only serves to level up your boss powers. Once that is done, it accumulates and is basically useless.
The Oath of the Revealer is your seasonal progress, which you can track at the board in Tarsarak. Over a total of 18 levels, you collect seasonal rewards there when you master apparition raids and hideout bosses. The community is currently discussing the bosses in the endgame because, in Season 8 of Diablo 4, they do not simply go down and also hit back hard. One boss is particularly annoying the community right now.
