Crafting orders are a new feature of WoW: Dragonflight. In theory, they are supposed to allow players to find a crafter who can create their desired item more quickly and easily. In practice, it works quite well, but there are also weaknesses.
What are crafting orders? Crafting orders are a new feature that has been introduced in WoW with Dragonflight.
If you previously wanted a specific item that could be crafted by one of the professions, you had to cumbersome search for a crafter in the trade chat. This could take a long time and often caused frustration in the community.
It even got more complicated if you wanted an item that becomes soulbound upon crafting. In that case, you had no choice but to learn the corresponding profession yourself. This always required a lot of time and gold.
The new system aims to make professions interesting again in the long term and strengthen social aspects. If you don’t have a profession yet but want to try one, check out this guide: Leveling professions in WoW Dragonflight – Here’s how to do it faster
How do crafting orders work? If you want to have a specific item crafted, you can place a corresponding crafting order in Valdrakken. Even items that become bound upon pickup can be traded this way.
At the crafter market in Valdrakken, you can list the crafting orders. When you talk to the NPCs, a window opens that resembles the auction house. Here, you can select an item and place an order for it.
Subsequently, depending on the order, you need to provide the necessary materials and decide how high the commission should be. You will then receive the finished item by mail. If no one is available to fulfill your order, you will get your materials and the commission back.

The system has weaknesses – developers want to improve it
What have the developers said? In a blue post, Blizzard initially addressed the players’ criticism of the new system. They state that the system is far from being perfect. Therefore, they are closely monitoring the community’s thoughts and discussing various ways to improve it internally.
However, since the crafting orders are a brand new feature, the developers want to wait and see how the situation develops further before intervening. They are convinced that the crafting orders meet their core purpose. They allow crafters to create valuable gear and even soulbound items for all aspects of the game.
This would significantly increase the value and usefulness of professions while simplifying many related mechanics. Thus wait times can be reduced and frustrating moments avoided.
How do the developers want to improve the system? One of the biggest problems the developers currently see concerns the availability of public crafting orders. These are quickly taken since they can be completed relatively quickly by experienced crafters. Therefore, the developers are considering how to create more orders.
In addition, Blizzard has identified two problems that they want to fix in the future:
- Clients and crafters should find each other more easily. Especially when it comes to high-level gear, communication still mainly takes place in the trade chat. While the developers want to encourage and promote the social component of this interaction, they are also looking for a more effective solution to bring trading partners together quickly.
- Crafters who do not yet have the best recipes and highest skills should benefit better from crafting orders. The developers like the idea that crafters of all skill levels can improve their skills in this way while earning some gold coins.
What do the players say? Players hope that crafting orders will become more intuitive. It is not always clear which reagents are needed for a specific item. They are also concerned about smaller servers where some recipes are difficult to find or not available at all.
The community therefore wishes for crafting orders to be able to cross factions. This aligns with the general trend of overcoming the boundaries between factions. Blizzard plans to bring joint guilds for Horde and Alliance in WoW, but the new statement sounds vague
A large part of the community welcomes Blizzard’s open communication. In the past, this has not always been the case.
Now, it’s your turn! Have you placed or completed crafting orders yourself? Do you like the system? Do you have any suggestions for improvement? Or is all of this too complicated? Leave us a comment and share your thoughts with the community!
