Another announcement from Blizzard is causing a stir. Warcraft is finally going mobile – and much sooner than expected.
Warcraft fans are experiencing one nice announcement after another this week. Not only have boosting communities been put to an end, but cross-faction play has been announced, allowing Horde and Alliance to play together. Hardly a day later, Blizzard revealed another small highlight:
Warcraft will have a mobile game later this year.
Where does the information come from? Directly from Blizzard’s financial report for the 4th quarter of the 2021 fiscal year. This was published yesterday evening, on February 3, 2022.
What was said exactly? In the financial report there is a line that – translated into English – says:
Blizzard plans substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022, including new experiences for World of Warcraft and Hearthstone and will ensure that completely new Warcraft mobile content reaches players’ hands for the first time.
This clearly confirms that Blizzard is planning a Warcraft mobile game for this year, which you will soon be able to play on your smartphones.
Is the release really in 2022? Whether the release is actually slated for this year is questionable. The text is not very clearly worded, so it could also mean that Warcraft Mobile might only enter alpha or beta testing in 2022. However, it seems clear that something is planned for this year in some way.
What kind of game could this be? That remains the big question. Not all games are suitable for mobile, and those waiting for a port of World of Warcraft will probably be disappointed.
A genre already established in the mobile market with popular Blizzard heroes would certainly be possible, such as a hero-collecting game or a mobile strategy game.
But there is still no concrete information. So, we will have to wait and see if Blizzard gives us more information in the coming weeks and months or if we have to wait for a spontaneous reveal.
