At BlizzCon 2018, not only was Diablo Immortal announced, but also a mobile game for Warcraft, which had apparently been in development for quite some time. Now, several years have passed, but reliable, concrete information is still lacking. However, Blizzard has now made an announcement about an announcement.
Update April 29: Blizzard has now announced that new information about the game will be shared with players on May 3 at 7:00 PM.
What was specifically announced? During the earnings call discussing Activision Blizzard’s current quarterly figures, there was also a brief mention of Warcraft Mobile. It was stated that “new details about a mobile game in the Warcraft universe” will be revealed “in the coming weeks.”
However, there is still no concrete date. We will keep you updated on what is exactly behind Warcraft Mobile.
In the last two weeks, Blizzard has already been very active in sharing news:
- On April 19, the new Dragonflight expansions and WOTLK Classic were announced.
- Just yesterday, on April 25, the developers announced the release date and PC version of Diablo Immortal.
Warcraft Mobile has no genre yet, but many hope for an MMORPG
What kind of game will it be? This is still completely unknown. However, there are some statements that at least contain hints.
In spring 2021, Bobby Kotick revealed that there should be more and more frequent premium content for the Warcraft franchise. This is intended to maintain and expand the community of World of Warcraft.
Possible additions to WoW could include:
- A pet battle game that uses the pet combat system from WoW and possibly even connects it with the base game.
- A hero collector where players can collect well-known Warcraft characters and use them in battles.
Of course, a WoW mobile version with crossplay or a completely standalone MMORPG based on the Warcraft world would also be possible. These versions would be significantly more elaborate, which could explain the long development time.
Moreover, a statement from the last quarterly report suggests that Warcraft Mobile will be playable this year, albeit only in beta:
How long has Warcraft Mobile been in development? Clayton Chod is a 3D artist and has been working on Warcraft Mobile for quite some time. He has been with Blizzard since 2016 and claims to have already worked in 2021 for “the longest time at Blizzard” on the mobile game.
Since this game was announced back in late 2018, development must have started some time prior. It is likely that work has been going on for four to five years on this implementation.
What would you like to see as a mobile game for Warcraft? Preferably a strategy game, an addition to WoW, or a completely standalone MMORPG? Let us know in the comments.
The well-known Twitch streamer Asmongold would welcome a Warcraft Mobile, even though he would prefer to play a strategy game or a tower defense on his smartphone rather than a mythic raid.
One of the largest MMORPG streamers on Twitch says: “I would be glad if a WoW mobile comes”
