Overwatch or StarCraft as a TV series? Not so far-fetched. There are even plans.
You would actually think that Blizzard would stay away from the film and television industry after the polarizing Warcraft movie, but not so. As reported by BBC, they are currently considering bringing various Blizzard games, such as StarCraft and Overwatch, into a TV format.
The reason for this is the series “Skylanders,” which is running on Netflix and is based on the game series of the same name.
In an interview with Newsbeat, Stacey Shear and Nick Van Dyke from Activision Blizzard spoke about the future of video games as a basis for series, films, and other TV formats.
“We have already announced that we are making a big movie about Call of Duty, and that is an example that you have to find the right medium for each game. (…) We will find the best medium for each title, whether that’s film, TV series, or short film – whichever best serves the franchise.”
“In games, you are the character; in cinematic entertainment, you can better empathize with the characters and go on a journey with them, side by side.”
However, they do not see the fact that other companies are hopping on the bandwagon and building series around their titles as a problem.
“Franchises do not grow on trees. We don’t worry about competition because we know that our franchises are so popular that if we deliver good work for our fans and provide the best content we can make, then it will be a success.”
Van Dyke added:
“It’s significantly easier to start with something that already has millions of fans.”
Cortyn says: With the Nether, yes! I would be so happy about a series that is based on Overwatch or StarCraft. Both universes offer so much potential for cool stories and would, in my opinion, be a meaningful expansion. The characters are already loved by millions of fans, which makes such a project worthwhile to keep fans connected to the respective brands.
