Further details about the new project from Blizzard Entertainment (World of Warcraft) have leaked. Apparently, an ambitious game is planned that is supposed to overshadow even Diablo 4 or Overwatch 2.
What kind of game is it? In May 2024, new job postings appeared on Blizzard’s career page related to an unannounced project. The requirements for developers suggest that it is a PvE game with a focus on story.
Now, more details have come to light (via Millenium). Apparently, the team is supposed to design locations, characters, themes, and story arcs for multiple seasons. In a description from Blizzard, it states:
The scope of work for the combat experience will impact the player, the enemies, and the environment. You will ensure that every aspect of the player’s actions is both satisfying and responsive. Under your watch, the monsters will be interesting, memorable, and challenging, from the initial threats to legendary boss fights that players will talk about for decades.
Legendary boss fights that are so good they are supposed to be “burned into players’ minds for decades” – THAT is definitely a statement.
At the same time, Blizzard is known for announcing ambitious plans that have often fallen short of expectations or not materialized at all, especially in the last decade. Rest in Peace, PvE mode of Overwatch 2.
Blizzard’s Canceled Projects
The developers of World of Warcraft have long been known to cancel game projects that potentially do not meet the studio’s quality standards – sometimes even shortly before their completion.
Just think of Warcraft Adventure, Starcraft Ghost, Shattered Nations, Project Nomad, the MMORPG project Titan (from which Overwatch emerged), or most recently the unnamed survival game.
In the early years, this policy reinforced Blizzard’s reputation for only releasing high-quality games. For many players, the Blizzard brand stood for quality. As it used to be said in the circle of friends: “Blizzard games can be bought blindly.”
By the latest catastrophic release version of Warcraft 3: Reforged, however, this image has turned 180 degrees. You can read more about it here: Warcraft 3: Reforged gets 2/10 points – What the hell happened?
