Blizzard recently presented the community of Diablo 2: Resurrected with a new riddle, which is actually over 12 months old. The fans seem to have found a solution, but it only hides more secrets…
What kind of riddle is this? In the Patch Notes for Update 2.5 for Diablo 2: Resurrected, Blizzard at the end gave a brief hint about mysterious, encrypted messages. Specifically, it says:
We flipped through the old manual of Diablo II and found this confusing entry… What could it mean?
A bunch of fans immediately set out to decode the riddle in a massive community effort. They quickly realized that the text visible in the image refers to the famous “Chat Gem” that adorns the lobbies in Diablo 2.
In fact, just a few hours after release, the code was cracked. Various numbers generate a text according to a so-called book cipher (“Ottendorf cipher”).
This is the solution: The various numbers submitted by countless fans combined result in the story of the different Diablo parts and more. In “Visions,” an individual recounts how the world of Diablo was created and what happened next.
The storylines of Diablo 1, Diablo 2, and Diablo 3 are retold. Even the story of Diablo Immortal is supposed to be included, even though it hadn’t even been released at the time the riddle was introduced in 2021.
Some additional “Visions” tell stories that no one is quite sure what they mean. There may already be a hint about the story of the upcoming Diablo 4. YouTuber Ginger Gaming Mentor summarized the process and the results:
The community has also documented all results and steps in a Google Doc. Anyone who wants can also contribute there.
However, it is exciting that within the seemingly simple decryption, further messages are hidden. Even though the riddle was solved quickly, many fans now assume that there is more behind it.
“Blizzard owns the wisdom”
This is what the fans have now found: At least two new messages have appeared after decrypting the code. The first is quite obvious. If you line up the initial letters of the visions, you get the sentence: “The Gem Is Allseeing”.
What exactly this refers to is still unclear. However, there is another hidden message. Some of the codes that the Chat Gem outputs seem to be incorrect. Ginger Gaming Mentor has taken the trouble to find a meaning there as well:
In his video, he explains that the “errors” did not occur accidentally, but result in a new message. If you put them together in the correct order, they supposedly spell out the sentence: “Blizzard Own The Wisdom.”
What does that mean? Ginger Gaming Mentor assumes that this is simply a little self-aggrandizement in which Blizzard clarifies that they distribute the lore. He also believes, like many others, that there is more behind it.
More messages could be hidden in the decoded text, and there is a number that has not yet been solved. Fans suspect that the word “fate” is missing so far, but the fact that no one has found the corresponding number raises further riddles. Some also suspect new recipes for the Horadric Cube that might be hidden somewhere.
Currently, searches are hot in multiple Discords in the community, and fans are looking for new meanings in the messages. Whether there is one is still uncertain. Some believe they need further hints from Blizzard – after all, that’s where the wisdom lies. Or it might be their “fate” to keep searching.
