Warcraft could soon receive a series or even another movie. Where do the rumors come from? Blizzard is fueling them itself.
Warcraft fans have had to endure, with gritted teeth, that more and more successful video game franchises have been given their own TV adaptations in recent years. Dragon Age, Witcher, League of Legends, Dota, and several others have received their own series, and most of them have done surprisingly well. But now some hints have rekindled hope – as Warcraft or other Blizzard universes could receive new adaptations.
Where does the hope come from? Even though it requires a bit of wishful thinking, the ambiguous statements come from Blizzard. On Twitter, the user “DNAngel” stated that we “need a sequel for the Warcraft movie” and tagged Blizzard as well as Mike Ybarra. He responded:
For a movie, I’m not sure, but there are certainly some stories we want to tell.
As if that weren’t suspicious enough, he subsequently tagged Chris Metzen, the former story guru of Warcraft. He replied:
Indeed! A movie also sounds fun. 🙂
It is particularly noticeable that Ybarra tagged Chris Metzen in his tweet. Because his current position at Blizzard is somewhat uncertain and not clearly defined. He was indeed hired a few months ago as a “Creative Advisor” and was supposed to help the World of Warcraft team with the story for the future, but he is to “work on other projects in the growing franchise” thereafter.
These could be games – but a movie or series is also possible.
Why now? In recent years, adaptations of video games that have been equipped with a corresponding large budget have been extremely successful. Whether one looks at Arcane, Witcher, or Cyberpunk: Edgerunner, all have been well received by fans. The year 2023 is no different. “The Last of Us” is the most successful series of the year, and the Mario movie is currently the most successful theater film of the year.
The “curse” that long hung over video game adaptations seems to be broken. It would therefore only be logical for Blizzard to consider bringing Warcraft back to the big screen or to TV sets.
How likely is that? It is hard to say at this current time. Of course, the statements from Metzen and Ybarra on Twitter could simply be considerations that mean nothing yet. However, it is also conceivable that Activision Blizzard wants to try again after the great success of video game series and films in recent years.
