Another Blizzard developer is leaving. Dave Kosak is moving to a different company and will no longer work on Hearthstone.
The series of layoffs at Blizzard seems to have no end. Now Hearthstone has lost one of its key developers, as Dave Kosak has chosen to leave Hearthstone and Blizzard. He will be working at another game studio in the future.
Who is Dave Kosak? Recently, Blizzard players likely know Dave Kosak primarily from Hearthstone. He is usually seen in the quirky announcements for new expansions, where he introduces new cards and mechanics, always garnished with a hefty dose of puns.
- He worked on Hearthstone as Lead Mission Designer, responsible for much of the content of the solo adventures.
- Before 2016, he worked on World of Warcraft as Lead Narrative Designer, primarily responsible for the story and narrative content of the quests.
Why is Kosak leaving? It is not entirely clear why Kosak is leaving after 12 years at Blizzard. In his farewell tweet, he stated that he would miss all his colleagues at Blizzard very much and promised Hearthstone players that a lot of cool content is in the works. What is currently happening in Hearthstone, like the new Duels mode, is just the beginning.
What is Kosak doing now? Kosak has taken a new position at “Deviation Games”. There he is supposed to work in a “key position” on a secret project. He cannot announce anything yet, but it is something “fantastic” that will make us all say “Whoa”.
Kosak is now part of a long list of individuals who have left Blizzard over the past few years. Especially the Hearthstone team has already lost its most recognizable face for the second time in a few years. Only in 2018, Ben Brode also left Blizzard, who had until then been the human face of Blizzard’s digital card game.
