Loot plays a significant role in Diablo 4. For the latest installment of the action RPG series, Blizzard has come up with some interesting mechanics.
What role does loot play in Diablo 4? Loot is essential in a hack and slash game. It is simply fun to defeat monsters, collect loot, and see if there is something that improves the character. If you then discover an exotic or rare item, perhaps even a long-sought set item, the joy is even greater.
This is also the case in the new action RPG Diablo 4. Loot is extremely important. But how exactly does the system work in hack ‘n’ slash?
Loot is classic, yet also new
What loot is available in Diablo? Basically, Diablo 4 does not reinvent the wheel in terms of loot. Therefore, in the new hack ‘n’ slash, there are again items, whose value and strength are displayed in colors.
In Diablo 4, the “weakest” items are white, followed by blue items and finally yellow ones. These are the standard items. So far, nothing new.
Following the yellow items are Legendary and Ancient Legendary. These items are significantly rarer to find but very powerful. Here, a particular aspect of Diablo 4 comes into play. Set items and Ancient Sets are on par with Legendaries. In Diablo 3, set items were often stronger.
This makes it even more important to wear a Mythic item that harmonizes with the rest of your equipment. In this way, the loot spiral should continue to be driven because you will likely be searching for such an item for quite some time.
What are the most powerful items? After Legendaries and Sets come the Mythics. These can be compared to “Exotics” from other online games like Destiny. Mythics are extremely powerful and correspondingly very rare.
It is possible to wear only one Mythic item at a time.
Runes are back in play
What else is there? Those who played Diablo 2 know that there used to be runes that you could attach to socketed items to grant them special powers.
Runes are making their way back into the game. In Diablo 4, the rune word system works similarly. It is also possible to combine multiple runes together. The other runes are then triggered by certain actions. For example, if you do not move for a while. In this way, you can create items that have many different powers, all triggered over time. This allows you to create your individual items.
What are other peculiarities? Blizzard stated at BlizzCon that they want to avoid the so-called ‘Power Creep’ of Diablo 3. This means you should not cause thousands of damage points per hit, which you could then further increase through bonuses.
Blizzard wants to keep everything in somewhat smaller proportions. Thus, it apparently won’t be possible to completely “overdo it” and deal an enormous amount of damage with your items.
The loot system of Diablo 4 sounds very exciting. Until the release, much can still change. Nevertheless, the current description makes you eager to try it out.
