For years, Blizzard stood for quality and great games – in the past. Now it seems to be on the upswing again. Is this Blizzard’s second spring?
For many years, Blizzard was synonymous with fantastic gaming experiences. Whether it was Warcraft III, World of Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, or Overwatch – whatever Blizzard was involved with and released became a success and was loved by the community.
But that time is long in the past. A huge sexism scandal, questionable decisions in the games, and a noticeable decline in quality have caused Blizzard to lose much of its former glory.
Where one once had the impression that Blizzard’s games were “made by gamers for gamers,” the prevailing sentiment in recent years has been: It’s all about developing content that generates as much revenue as possible and milking players for all they are worth.
That’s a reputation that’s hard to shake off.

But Blizzard seems to be on the path to improvement. The vast majority of overarching news in recent weeks and months has been positive. Sure, there are small news items with criticism, but the overall mood seems to be good across pretty much all of Blizzard’s games. How did this happen?
The Sad Chronicle of Overwatch
Even today, the journey of Overwatch and its successor Overwatch 2 feels like a bad joke. With Overwatch, Blizzard revolutionized the hero shooter genre and practically had the license to print money. Overwatch was on everyone’s lips, and regular content updates with new heroes, game modes, and cosmetic rewards provided a constant incentive.
It was simply a good, well-thought-out game that was played nearly nonstop in my circle of friends. At least until the development of the game suddenly came to a standstill. Because Overwatch suddenly sank into lethargy. The meta froze because updates dried up, and there were virtually no new contents anymore. The reason for this was Overwatch 2 with the promise of a PvE mode, an extensive campaign.
But for this promise, Overwatch (1) was sacrificed. The many months without updates had left the player base starving.
When Overwatch 2 then launched hastily and especially without the PvE mode (which was supposed to be added later), the disappointment was huge. It grew even larger when it became clear after a few months that: Yes, the PvE mode is not happening. We can’t do it; the community doesn’t want it at all. Many had already begun to wonder what substances were circulating among the Blizzard executives at that moment.
In the last year, Overwatch has then made a turnaround. It remains extremely ironic that it has renamed itself from “Overwatch 2” back to “Overwatch” after the community sarcastically claimed for years that the 2 only stood for broken promises and false expectations.
But right now, Overwatch is in a better position than ever before. This is not only due to a huge influx of new heroes, like the absurd jetpack cat or the tank-mommy Domina, but also due to the variety of well-thought-out game modes:
- The 5vs5 mode, the standard mode of Overwatch 2, is loved by some and hated by others.
- Those who prefer a classic experience can opt for the 6vs6 mode, which alleviates some pressure from the tanks and thus feels more relaxed.
- Those who like it bizarre can play Stadium – here all heroes have absurd powers that become even more outrageous with each round.
Even though there is no PvE mode, the story of Overwatch continues. Story content in the form of videos or comics that can be viewed in-game is exactly what a part of the community desires.
Currently, Overwatch is in better shape than perhaps ever and might experience its second spring.
