Diablo 4 gets seasons. To play these, you need a new character. This information is not new for veterans, but it mainly disturbs new players, as old characters will become useless. Or not? Blizzard clearly states: no, you can still use them and even do quite well. However, there are exceptions.
This was the concern:
- About every 3 months, there is a new season in Diablo 4. Season 1 begins in mid to late July.
- Players are now concerned that they need a new character every 3 months to see everything.
- This is only partially true, as Game Director Joe Piepiora clarifies on Twitter.
What you get without a season character: An important part of each new season will be new legendaries that can change your build. This includes legendary aspects as well as unique items (“Uniques”).
As Piepiora clarifies, these items will be available on day 1 of the season in the “eternal” realm, so for your existing characters. Those who want to improve their builds and continue grinding can do so without restrictions.
However, with your “eternal” character, you will not be able to see all the content of the season. Some features will be reserved solely for the seasonal realms and characters.

Battle Pass, cosmetics, and story only in the season
Why do I need a new character? If you want to make progress in the battle pass, this can only be done with a seasonal character. The rewards are purely cosmetic, with the exception of some boosts, which will only be of use to you if you want to level up.
Both the free and paid battle pass must be played through the season. Also, you will only be able to play the new story missions on the seasonal realms. However, these have nothing to do with the main story. The main story is told through expansions.
Currently, players are building their own mechanics and are simply lining up for … nothing.
Each season is also supposed to get new mechanics. As it stands now, these will also only be playable on seasonal realms. If you are playing a season for the first time, you will also have to redo some things:
What happens after the season? All characters that you play during a season will then become eternal characters and take their loot with them. This means that everything you earned will be transferred to the eternal realm.
Cosmetics that you did not earn will likely not be available to you afterwards. Whether they will ever appear in the shop again, we cannot say at this time.
