Rumors say that Blizzard actually Diablo 4 was supposed to be announced at BlizzCon 2018, but they changed their mind shortly before then. The reason could be an old, canceled project. At least that’s what a theory says.
Is Titan blocking Diablo 4? The US site Kotaku has unofficially spoken with some current and former Blizzard employees. Some said that the aftermath of the originally planned and discarded project Titan might have an impact on Diablo 4.
Diablo 4 should not become a second Titan
What was Titan? The project codenamed Titan was supposed to be a massive, new MMORPG from Blizzard. The vision of Titan was an MMORPG that was to follow World of Warcraft with the following elements:
- The Sims
- Destiny
- Team Fortress 2
- World of Warcraft
Earlier information suggests that Titan was meant to be a post-apocalyptic sci-fi game. The plan was apparently to engage in normal activities during the day in Titan and be a superhero at night .
What Titan would have really become will probably never be known. In 2014, production on the giant title was stopped. Shortly after, the failed Titan became the new and successful project Overwatch.
The shadow of Titan over Blizzard: A lot was invested in Titan early on. The game was already largely known in early stages of development and there was hype around it. Blizzard itself put resources and time into the project.
However, too much information leaked too early. Many fans already had a good picture of Titan and had set their own expectations for the game. There was hype over a game that never really existed.
The expectations of hyped fans and working developers were heavily disappointed after the development was discontinued. A former developer told Kotaku:
Titan casts a shadow over us all. Although Overwatch has emerged from its remnants, people do not look at Titan and see a success.
Fear for Diablo 4: This shadow of Titan’s failure looms over the development of Diablo 4, which apparently already exists under the codename “Fenris”. The team simply does not want another game that consumes many resources and ultimately never comes after a big hype.
Even the mention of Diablo 4, which was supposedly supposed to take place at BlizzCon 2018, could have sparked expectations that the developers do not want to set yet. A former employee said:
The Diablo team is very paranoid when it comes to announcing things. They might get caught in a spiral. They do not want to show the game until they have a trailer or a demo.
What truth there is to these unofficial statements is difficult to ascertain. However, it is true that Titan is considered a failure despite the huge success of Overwatch.
