Recently, the first public testing phase of the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has ended with the Alpha. PS4 players could get a first impression of the multiplayer. What are players saying? And how has the new CoD gone down with you so far?
What is the Alpha all about? After Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has now introduced its story and multiplayer, the first players could get their first impression of the new CoD 2020 last weekend – in a multiplayer alpha. However, this test took place only on the PS4. Players on PC and Xbox One will have to wait for the upcoming Open Beta of CoD Cold War to join in.
Here are the first reactions to the Cold War Alpha
In general, the game has received mixed feelings after the alpha test so far. While some aspects are praised, there is also a lot of criticism – although it should be noted that it is an Alpha and plenty can change before the final release version. The developers have reaffirmed this.
One of the contentious points is the now increased Time to Kill (TTK). It noticeably takes longer than in Modern Warfare to take down an opponent. Some are pleased about this as it reduces the chance of lucky shots, while others are annoyed because it takes so long that seemingly certain kills can often be salvaged.
The automatic health regeneration is also controversially discussed in connection with the TTK. Some are pleased as it gives them a better chance to re-enter the match effectively after healing. Others are upset because critical injuries to opponents are hardly rewarded.
What is praised: Among other things, the solid gunplay and the maps along with their design are praised. Especially a special bouncy board Easter egg on the Miami map delighted many players and was celebrated.
What is also well-received is the return of map voting. It is now finally possible to vote on the played map before the next match. This was not the case in Modern Warfare and was sorely missed by many fans and players.
What is criticized: Criticism is directed at the matchmaking, as the controversial SBMM (skill-based matchmaking) is active in Cold War, even though many had hoped for the opposite. Some players complained that their matches felt almost like professional league games – they had to “sweat” constantly.

Also criticized was the balancing regarding the weapons, but this should certainly change and on the other hand, the developers seem to have conducted an experiment: CoD Cold War: Players complain about OP weapons – developer says it should be like this
Furthermore, some critique was directed at the graphics, the animations, or the footstep sounds. Many players feel that these were better executed in the predecessor Modern Warfare – although it should be fairly noted that this is an alpha, a quite early test build.
This is the general sentiment in the community: So far, the mood surrounding CoD Cold War is divided. There is certainly praise and many see a lot of potential. While some emphasize that in its current state, it feels more like a step back from Modern Warfare rather than an innovative next-gen multiplayer that has been so heavily advertised. The developers thus still have a lot of work ahead of them if they truly want to convince players.
