On Black Friday, the great offers abound on Amazon and other platforms. However, there are a number of products that you should not buy. There are various reasons for this.
Just before Christmas, you feel overwhelmed by dozens of deals and offers thanks to Black Friday. However, there are many products that are hardly worth it on Black Friday.
As a rule, always remember: Compare prices and offers and do not buy just anything at random.
Bedding and Mattresses
A bed or a new mattress is usually an expensive investment that requires careful consideration. Many people wait for appropriate offers. However, good deals in the bedding category are rather rare on Black Friday.
The best prices of the year for household items like bed linens and towels occur during the clearance sales, traditionally held in January.
Toys
This is mainly because many retailers try to get rid of their remaining stock just before Christmas. As shopping expert Kristin McGrath from RetailMeNot explains (via aarp.com): “Retailers will be eager to clear out the remaining toys and games, and they will start reducing these in the week leading up to Christmas.”
Such actions just before Christmas are worthwhile, especially if you need a last-minute gift.
However, there is also an exception that you should keep in mind: For certain products that are particularly in demand, it is likely that these items may be sold out shortly after their release. If you’re interested in these, you shouldn’t count on further discounts at Christmas.
Jewelry
Those considering buying an engagement ring or another piece of jewelry at Christmas often find better prices at other times.
This is mainly because jewelers are extremely busy during the holiday season and have limited inventory. Many people like to give jewelry as Christmas gifts. Generally, only small discounts are offered here due to the high demand.
Fitness Equipment
Many people make resolutions after Christmas and the holidays to lose a few pounds or shed the holiday weight. Retailers and gyms take advantage of this opportunity to offer particularly good discounts on fitness equipment or memberships.
If you need fitness equipment, it’s better to delay your purchase until next spring. You will also find cheaper memberships next spring, when gyms will be trying to attract you again.
Winter Clothing
The same rule applies to winter clothing and accessories as it does for bedding: Once the season is over, prices drop. Thus, you will find the best deals in January or February. Therefore, it is better to buy a new expensive winter jacket or a second pair of winter shoes in January.
Exceptions are small and larger souvenirs, such as scarves, socks, or gloves, which are often marketed with a nice design or offering for Christmas. Here, it can be worthwhile to compare prices.
Gift Vouchers and Cards
Vouchers and gift cards are almost never on sale. If you need a voucher, you can get that at any time; there are no specific discounts on Black Friday.
Sometimes, large manufacturers offer special promotions with vouchers, but these are often tied to (sometimes) difficult conditions: For example, you may need to purchase a product for at least 500 Euros to redeem your 5 Euro voucher. So-called “cashback” promotions are only worthwhile if you really need a new product.
Generic Door Supervisors
Unknown brands use Black Friday and other major sales to showcase themselves with steep discounts. However, these offers are not always good. The generic TV with 4K resolution and 60 inches for 200 Euros may seem fantastic at first glance. However, once you have the device at home, you may not be so happy anymore.
Such products, often referred to in marketing as “door supervisors”, should not be purchased.
