Breeding horses in Black Desert is quite complex. Our YouTuber Refaser reveals how it works.
Taming, breeding, and leveling horses in Black Desert
As in almost every MMORPG, there are one or two opportunities in Black Desert to be carried gallantly through the game world. Since the game only provides a lame donkey from level 11, players often overlook this option. Many players simply do not know how to get better mounts. YouTuber Refaser reveals in one of his videos how taming horses works and what you need to consider to become a great breeder yourself.
The preparation for taming horses
Before you do anything else, you should grab the loyal donkey and ride around a bit. This may sound trivial, but only in this way can you increase your training level, which rises simply by taking a leisurely ride through the game world. Level 5 is the goal here; afterward, you can park the donkey in the next garage (and probably ignore it for the rest of your playtime).
Animals are also quite an expensive hobby in Black Desert; anyone who wants to successfully catch their first animal should have at least 20,000 – 30,000 silver and a lot of time on their hands. It’s important that you stock up on good lassos from the stable masters – 15 to 20 pieces should suffice, each costing 1500 silver. Afterward, head to a tavern and buy 30 cane sugar and 3 mineral water to subsequently create sugar cubes (because horses love sugar).
With this preparation, you can embark on a search for the horses that roam freely at various points in the game world. You can find detailed locations in the video above.
A mini-game for taming horses
As soon as you find a horse, equip yourself with a lasso and approach cautiously. Wait until the horse stops running away and then swing the lasso in its direction. If you succeed, a small mini-game will immediately begin. The goal is to slowly approach the horse by pressing the W key. However, as soon as the horse rears up, you must hammer the spacebar until it calms down, after which you can move closer again. Once you are very close to the horse, you can either feed it carrots and sugar or try to mount it immediately.
There is no strict rule, but sugar reduces the likelihood that the horse will throw you off. If you take the decisive step and the horse does not flee – congratulations! If the horse escapes and bolts – don’t worry, the next opportunity will surely come.
Aftercare and breeding
A captured animal must comply with bureaucracy and must first be registered. So take the horse to a stable master and “save” it with a name afterward. Only here will you recognize what kind of horse you have actually obtained – namely, its level and gender. This is important because now you can slowly start to build your horse breeding. The “better” the parent horses are, the higher the chance that a much more talented horse will emerge from the breeding attempt.
Keep in mind that horses can only be used for breeding a few times – male horses twice, female horses even only once. However, this also ensures that female horses have a high market value and can be sold excellently.
