In Black Desert , the community’s preference for server technology is being surveyed – as there are numerous possibilities.
Mega or Mini Servers in Black Desert?
In the Black Desert forum, Jouska, the community manager, has launched a survey asking players for their opinions on various server configurations.
The main focus was on the number of servers per region (i.e., Europe and America). The number of servers would depend on the amount of channels to be supported, which is why they are asking directly about this. The majority of players (50%) prefer small servers with 1-5 different channels. The “channels” then act as different instances of the zones, allowing players to switch between them within a server.
About 35% do not want multiple servers per region (essentially one mega server). Only a small group (15%) desires several, but larger servers.
However, it is interesting (and quite surprising) that the numbers shift again when asking “Do you want a single (mega server) or not?” – and the community appears to be divided. Just over 51% definitely do not want mega servers, so the rest (49%) find these large solutions absolutely acceptable. This already calls for a long, internal discussion.
Lastly, they also ask what players think about the possibility of “Dynamic Channels” and whether they would prefer a single or multiple servers. With dynamic channels, depending on the region, multiple instances of the same area would be launched once there is high demand. As soon as the number of players decreases, the excess channels will be closed.
This is somewhat similar to what is already known from games like Guild Wars 2 or WildStar. However, this concept is currently just a theoretical discussion – whether this is indeed possible for “our” version of the game is still not definitively settled.
Whether the survey will actually have a significant impact on the ultimate technology of the servers remains to be seen. However, it cannot hurt to voice your opinion in the forum.
