Black Desert-publisher Kakao Games has added a new feature that allows you to switch your character “on-the-fly”. However, the system is subject to a few limitations and players are wondering: Is it perhaps unnecessary?
Powerful protector. In Black Desert, you roam the wild world of the game and face various dangers. But with the character swap, your character is no longer completely alone. If a risky situation arises, you can let the big brother of your alt handle it at the push of a button.
Once the problem is defused, your powerful main steps back and your alt can continue their journey. At least that’s how many players envisioned the character swap system. But it has been implemented differently.
Feature with limitations
How does the swapping work? To swap characters, you need to have at least one character at level 56 or higher. Then you select the “character swap” button located on the left side of the screen next to the “camping tool” icon. In the character swap button, you select a character. This character will become the marked character. By right-clicking, you then switch to the marked character.

However, the character swap is subject to some limitations:
- Characters can only be marked or unmarked in cities. An exception to this are the cities Kusha, Abun, and Muiquun, where you cannot mark or unmark characters.
- In the desert, the vast ocean, and during siege/invasion wars, character switching is not allowed. You cannot use the new feature in large parts of the maps.
- With a marked character, you cannot buy or sell trade goods. It is not possible to move trade goods to or from a warehouse, greatly limiting the usefulness for players trading items.

Unfortunately, you cannot perform character swaps arbitrarily often in a row. There must be a 5-minute wait between two character swaps. The ability Emergency Escape, which allows you to escape from risky situations, shares the cooldown with the character swap.
A leisurely change: When you swap your character, there is a short loading time. You cannot quickly switch characters in battles, as is the case in some beat ’em ups. This is a missed opportunity for some players. After all, a fast switch would bring fresh air into PvP.
Good or bad feature?
What can you do with it? On Reddit, Black Desert players discuss possible uses for character swapping. One player suggests the following:
- You can level alts but always have a powerful character who helps them in risky situations.
- Players can switch to another character when grinding with them becomes boring.
- You can switch to the new class Lahn and benefit from her high mobility to reach hard-to-get places.

Doubtful benefit. However, other players strongly doubt the usefulness of the new feature. One user in the Black Desert forum advises players not to use the character swap system.
If players want to grind, they should just let their alts run into their hunting grounds and can then switch between them easily by logging out without constraints. Since there is a loading screen both when logging out and when swapping characters, this player sees little benefit in the new feature. After all, players can switch between their characters anywhere, and there is no specific level that players must reach.
What do you think about this feature? Useful or pointless in its current implementation?
