The yesterday’s State of Play came with a strong lineup of new games for the PS5 therefore. One of them has particularly attracted attention with its main character – a muscular rooster. However, often the even more exciting genre of the game is overlooked.
Which game is being referred to? This was announced for the first time as Project Windless, with an official reveal trailer. Although there was already a bizarre and bloodthirsty trailer in September 2022, nothing more than the template was known.
Project Windless adapts The Legend of the Bird That Drinks Tears, a series of popular novels by the Korean author Lee Youngdo. These take place in a high-fantasy world that is heavily inspired by Korean mythology and folklore.

Fight against hordes of enemies as a giant muscle rooster
What does the trailer show? The first thing that catches the eye is the unusual protagonist of the game. This is a humanoid chicken (and a real muscle mountain), which slaughters through hordes of enemies with swords. The jokes write themselves.
In the lore of the game, you play as a Rekon. These are feathered beings about three meters tall with a rooster’s head – and they are extremely powerful. They carry oversized, nearly indestructible weapons, and even their scream has great destructive power. The main enemies appear to be the Naga, who resemble reptiles with their scaly skin.
A Rekon is also the perfect choice for the type of action game that Project Windless is likely to become. In the trailer, the open-world action RPG looks like a Musou in the style of Dynasty Warriors.
What are Musous anyway? They are a subgenre of action games where you fight against large groups of enemies as a single overpowering warrior. The fights are based on hack & slash titles.
For fans of the Musou genre, there is currently really only one option, namely the Dynasty Warriors series from the Japanese developer Koei. It has been around since 1997 and the latest installment, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, was released in January 2025. Project Windless could therefore become an exciting alternative.
