World of Warships and ice hockey? Wargaming is entering one of the most curious celebrity partnerships in the video game industry.
What do ice hockey and sea battles in World of Warships have in common? Frozen water? Pastime for Russian sailors in winter? Nothing? Wrong! The Russian ice hockey star Alex – The Gr8 – Ovechkin!
Alex The Great becomes Commander in World of Warships

In an unexpected cooperation with the Russian studio Wargaming, the world champion and Stanley Cup winner Alexander Ovechkin will join World of Warships as Commander with the next major update. This partnership has now been captured and presented in its own trailer.
What is to be seen? In the trailer, Ovechkin gives it his all and shows “unmistakable” parallels between everyday life, professional ice hockey, and the virtual sailor life in World of Warships.
“Success doesn’t come alone,” Ovechkin says in the video. “Not in life. Not in ice hockey. Not in World of Warships.”
Accompanied by dramatic scenes on the ice and a visually stunning battle at sea, he continues: “You have to work for it. You have to fight for it. You have to earn your greatness!”
Statement from Ovechkin: In a statement, the star added for clarification: “I wanted people to understand that players in every competition need to be inspired to never give up. Video games are just like sports – play more, train more.”
Finally, he said: “When I started playing, I realized that I am not a particularly good ship commander. But just like on the ice, I will keep playing and improving my skills until I am the best.”

No matter which ships you use – Ovi comes with perks that improve the targeting and survival of all ships. In addition to other new camouflage patterns for the ships, there are also hockey-inspired patches and a collection of additional in-game items.
By the way: This is not the first time that Wargaming makes such obscure deals:
- They had signed Dolph Lundgren as the “Swedish ambassador” for World of Tanks in 2016
- and managed to get the Italian football goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon for World of Tanks in 2018.
