Asmongold is considered both the biggest fan and the biggest critic of World of Warcraft. In recent years, he has frequently found much to complain about. However, now the Twitch streamer is thrilled with the new expansion Dragonflight – especially thanks to the Evoker.
Who is the streamer?
- Asmongold is the largest MMORPG streamer on Twitch and has primarily grown with World of Warcraft. He also won the award for best MMORPG streamer at the Twitch Streamer Awards.
- At the same time, he is one of the biggest critics of the game and Blizzard itself. Asmongold has referred to WoW as a dying game and temporarily switched to Final Fantasy XIV.
- However, he is now extremely impressed by the new expansion Dragonflight and especially by the new class, the Dracthyr Evoker.
MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus was also able to play the Evoker for 7 hours and is thrilled. You can see gameplay of the new class here:
Evokers impress Asmongold with special abilities
This is how Asmongold reacts to Dragonflight: During the Alpha of Dragonflight, Asmongold was able to get a picture of the Evoker of the Dracthyr. He is gradually learning more abilities of the class.
During his stream, Asmongold tried out the Evoker for several hours and referred to them several times as “badass,” or absolutely cool.
In a short clip, the reactions of the streamer are compiled. There are several astonished expressions such as, “Jesus!” or, “Holy crap!” Asmongold is visibly excited like a child with a new toy and is constantly surprised by the scope:
What makes the Evoker so special? The new class originates from the dragons in WoW and comes with special abilities. They can “empower” some of their spells, meaning charging them longer to increase their effect.
With 2 specializations, Evokers can either deal damage or heal and draw on iconic abilities of the dragonflights. They use time magic from the bronze dragons or the cleansing flames of the red dragonflight.
Asmongold is particularly excited about the “Deep Breath,” an ability known from black dragons like Onyxia. The Dracthyr fly forward in a destructive flight, dealing massive damage.
Their movement is also unique. Dracthyr can fly freely, similar to the new dragon riding feature from Dragonflight. You can see more about the new feature in the video:
WoW needs more “evergreen features”
In another video on YouTube, Asmongold talks about what has made WoW worse in the past expansions and what Dragonflight is supposed to improve. In his opinion, one point is particularly important, borrowed power.
In the past, it has happened too often that an expansion revolved only around one feature – such as the Garrison in WoD or the Covenants in Shadowlands. Everything was focused on that and moved further away from the game, but it was gone again after the expansion.
Dragonflight focuses more on what WoW already has and improves upon it. In an interview with Product Director Pat Dawson, this was explained to MeinMMO as to why Dragonflight is foregoing such systems:
What we did in the past with expansion-specific power was heavily tied to the respective addon. Overall, there were some good things and some challenges […] and what we want to achieve with Dragonflight is to bring something that is more “evergreen.” Something that fundamentally changes how you interact with your class and is not just related to the expansion. That’s how we came up with things like the talent system.
The colleagues from GameStar also discussed further exciting topics about Dragonflight in the interview with Game Director Ion Hazzikostas.
Further changes include things like the revamped UI or the crafting system – things that can be built upon in later expansions. Asmongold also mentions in his video that such “evergreen” content is better for WoW than changes that only affect a small part of the player base or disappear again.
If you want to get a picture of Dragonflight yourself, you can participate in tests before the release until the end of 2022. There will be a beta, and currently, an alpha is running. You can sign up for all tests.
