While the Fallout series has just received a season 2, the prospects for a new video game in the Fallout franchise are currently bleak. Todd Howard from Bethesda explains in an interview that even the older titles are more likely to be released as remasters rather than remakes.
What about a remake? In a video on the YouTube channel of Kinda Funny, Todd Howard, Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios, discusses remakes and remasters. He explains that he personally has more of an anti-attitude towards remakes:
I am rather against remakes. I respect other remakes, but I really believe that the age of a game is part of what makes it, its personality and what it stood for when it was released.
Instead, he mentions The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion as a good way to re-release a game for modern audiences. There, the team tried to create the best version of the game, as if the original game had been given countless patches.
Howard himself respects remakes, but he is personally more in favor of remaster versions. This crushes the hopes of many players concerning a new addition to Fallout, as seen on Reddit.
Older Fallout Titles with Flaws
What does this mean for Fallout? Howard also addressed rumors about possible reboots for Fallout. He confirmed that the most investment would be made in Fallout, including the series. Behind the scenes, several Fallout projects are being worked on. However, most of the focus is currently on The Elder Scrolls 6.
Thanks to his previous inclinations, we know that if there are reboots for Fallout 3 or New Vegas, they will be more in the style of Oblivion as remasters and not as completely newly developed remakes.
