Top Zarya player Geguri has recently become the first female player to join the Overwatch League roster. It now seems clear which team she will be playing for: the Shanghai Dragons!
After a long debate about the lack of women in the Overwatch League, South Korean player Kim “Geguri” Se-yeon has recently spoken up. She announced that she will be joining the Overwatch League – she just didn’t want to reveal which team yet.
There were speculations that Geguri would be competing for New York Excelsior. According to ESPN, it’s now clear which team she will be playing for: the Shanghai Dragons! Together with Geguri, the South Korean players Fearless and Ado are being signed, along with an unknown Chinese player.
The first player under a bad star
The Shanghai Dragons are currently the weakest team in the Overwatch League. With a record of 0 wins to 8 losses and a map score of 6 won to 36 lost games, they are clearly trailing even behind Dallas Fuel.
The team actually has potential. They won a map against Seoul Dynasty, who at that time were crushing their opponents. A small victory despite the loss.
It is therefore not surprising that Shanghai has looked for players outside China. Particularly with Geguri, they have good chances to improve in the second phase. The performance so far does not speak well for the remaining players.
A major issue is also the language barrier. All previous players speak Mandarin – three of the new ones now speak Korean. They are expected to take a crash course in the language to enable communication. How that will go remains to be seen.
Why is Geguri joining the Dragons?
Geguri’s decision is quite questionable. In the past, she had a rough time as the first female player in the Overwatch APEX with the ROX Orcas – and didn’t win a single match in the tournament. This may have been one of the reasons why she didn’t play in the Overwatch League from the start.
However, at the Dragons, Geguri would have a good chance to stand out positively. In other teams, she might have faded into the background. This way, she has the opportunity to showcase her skills and make a name for herself.
When exactly Geguri and the other players will be integrated into the Dragons and start playing is still unclear. So far, there is also no official statement from the team or Blizzard, so the “if” is not yet completely clarified. However, sources expect that such news will follow shortly.
