In Destiny 2 you can now tackle the Signs mission on Grandmaster and earn the Catalyst for the Exotic Tale of a Drowned Man. We explain how to survive the tricky horror trip and complete the quest “Close to the Trigger.”
What’s new: With the Weekly Reset on February 24, 2021, the acclaimed horror mission Signs received an update.
- The trip on the dark spaceship is now significantly harder. A Grandmaster version needs to be cracked.
- In return, you will receive the Masterwork Catalyst for the new Exotic Tale of a Drowned Man.
- Story lovers will also learn more about the history of the Glykon and how the Cabal Empress Caiatl and her father Calus are involved in it.
How to get started: If you have completed the Signs mission before, you should pay Zavala a visit in the Tower. He will give you the quest “Close to the Trigger.”
Then select the Signs mission at the top left in the Confusion Bay. You can now manually change the difficulty. Click on “normal 1230” and set the difficulty to “Grandmaster 1320.”
Once you have completed the tricky mission on Grandmaster, return to Zavala and he will hand you the exotic Catalyst for Tale of a Drowned Man.

Complete Signs on Grandmaster in Destiny 2
The process is identical to that of the normal version. You work your way through the same puzzles as in the normal version, and the fights proceed in the same way. However, some changes lead to a significantly more stressful and difficult experience. Therefore, you should approach as a full strike team.
What’s different? The additional power level of 1320 is immediately noticeable. Just a few hits from enemies will kill you instantly, and especially the explosives in the narrow corridors are really dangerous. The same goes for the crossbow snipers. If you die, you can revive yourself after 15 seconds – teammates can revive you immediately.
The bigger problem is the new timer. As soon as you start the mission, you only have 25 minutes before you are sent back to orbit and have to start over. That can be really stressful and adds a new component to the horror of the mission.
After you defeat the final boss and want to advance to the secret of the ship, the timer keeps running. But don’t worry: if the boss falls before the 25-minute mark, you have nothing to fear.
Even if you die a few times during the mission, the timer of 25 minutes can be broken. But you really cannot spend too long searching for switches or the correct path.
These modifiers are active: In addition to the higher power level and the timer, 4 modifiers make your Guardian life hard:
- Champion – Mob: All 3 Champion types will appear (more on this later).
- Equipment locked: Once the mission starts, you cannot adjust weapons, armor, or class settings. So prepare yourself.
- On target: Enemy shields can almost only be broken with the corresponding element. A Void shield should thus be handled with a Void weapon. Therefore, coordinate with your team or pack Exotics like Arbalest.
- Wipeout: The radar is disabled.
Where are the champions on the spaceship?
Is this a mistake? According to the modifier, you should encounter numerous champions. However, there is currently not a single one onboard the Glykon. Whether this is a mistake and the enemies will come later is currently unclear.
- You don’t need to equip your loadout with anti-champion mods currently.
- Some Guardians wonder if there are even champion enemies at all.
- We at MeinMMO ran the mission ourselves on 24.02. around 8 AM and can confirm that there was no champion on board.
Tale of a Drowned Man as a Masterwork and find all 12 data pads
How to level the Catalyst: Once you have completed the quest “Close to the Trigger” and spoken with Zavala in the Tower, you are the proud owner of the Catalyst for Tale of a Drowned Man. However, you still need to level up the gem to unlock the upgrades for your Exotic.
You have 2 options:
- Kill 800 enemies. You can do this quite quickly in the Broken Throne – in the section with the Shadow thralls on the stairs.
- Find hidden depots in the Signs mission. Each of the 12 chests on the spaceship grants you between 12 and 13%.
You can also combine both methods. Currently, it looks like you can only open 2 of the 12 hidden depots.
To do this, you need to interact with the data pads scattered everywhere – this opens a passage nearby where you can find the chest. There will probably be a new pad added weekly. However, you can probably only interact with the data pads after you have completed the mission once in the current week.

How powerful is the new Masterwork Catalyst for the Exotic Scout?
This is what the weapon can do: Like all exotic Masterwork Catalysts, the upgrade allows your Exotic to produce Spheres through quick kills. These recharge the Super for you or your team and are important for the strong mechanic “Charged with Light.”
You also gain 2 additional benefits:
- The rate of fire of Tale of a Drowned Man increases significantly when firing from the hip. Instead of a 120 Scout, you have a fixed 180 Scout. If you shoot while aiming, the rate of fire remains unchanged. The damage is identical in both variants.
- Firing from the hip becomes more precise. With the Catalyst, all known limitations disappear. The weapon becomes even more precise than when firing through the sight – there is no bloom and the crosshair does not widen a bit. This only applies as long as you are not in the air (which you can bypass with certain Exotics or skills).
In short: the Catalyst transforms Tale of a Drowned Man into a kind of Last Word. If you hit accurately from the hip – which is not too difficult thanks to the upgrade – your damage increases, and you reload faster.
